The conference theme of "Conscience, Character, and Culture" focuses sessions and discussion aroud the topics of conscience and virtues (such as conscientiousness, courage, integrity); conscience and moral judgment; conscience and methods of ethical deliberation; cultural formation of conscience; moral sentiments (the “clear” conscience, “pangs of conscience,” “dirty hands”); civic aspects of conscience, including freedom of conscience, conscientious refusal, conscientious objection, civil disobedience; conscience and professional commitments; and whistleblowing.

Our 2013 Keynote speaker Mark Wicclair is a professor in philosophy at West Virginia University, and also has an appointment with the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at the University of Pittsburgh. He will be speaking on “Conscientious Objection in Health Care,” and his book is widely considered the best book on the topic.
