Organised by Bioethics Institute Ghent
Funded by the Society for Applied Philosophy and Ghent University

Speakers: Jeff McMahan (Rutgers University), Ingmar Persson (University of
Gothenburg, University of Oxford), Stephen Wilkinson (Lancaster University),
Axel Gosseries (Université Catholique de Louvain),Tom Douglas (University of
Oxford), Muireann Quigley (University of Bristol), Simon Rippon (Central
European University)), Ezio Di Nucci(University of Duisburg-Essen), James
Wilson (UCL), Heidi Mertes (Ghent University), Charles Delmotte (Ghent
University) and Katrien Devolder (Ghent University).

Rather than focusing on a particular topic, the conference will focus on a
particular approach to bioethics: the analytic approach. This approach is
widespread in the English speaking world (including in Scandinavia), but is
much less common in Continental Europe. The analytic approach within
philosophy is characterized by an emphasis on argumentative rigor and
clarity, and frequently draws on techniques developed particularly within
Anglo-American philosophy—especially philosophy of language,metaphysics and
epistemology. The speakers will present on various topics in bioethics. The
common thread will be the approach.
