Details

The  international conference «Rule Following: Reasoning, Reason, Rationality» will be held at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow on October 21-22, 2014. The conference is concerned with  the development of the conceptual apparatus for analysis  of theoretical and practical rationality; the reconstruction of the context of use such categories as "reasoning", "reason", "intellect", "power of judgment", "intelligence", "phronesis", "rule", "normativity"; the critical evaluation of traditional criteria and norms of rationality (the utility, optimality, efficiency, compliance with a scientific paradigm, cultural traditions, or social conventions, etc.);  the study of historical and methodological foundations for different conceptions of rationality (optimization-based models for rationality, bounded rationality, communicative rationality, interactive rationality etc.). Special attention will be paid to the problem of rule-following. The study of the rule-following problem could shed light on the key issues of contemporary epistemology associated with the criticism of interpretationism, platonism, mentalism, skepticism, psychologism, subjectivism.

The working languages of the conference will be Russian, English and French. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
