Call for Attention to Postgraduate students in Philosophy (part- or full-
time MA, MPhil, PhD) in the UK and further afield.

The BPPA Annual Conference is a philosophy conference run by and for
postgraduate students in the UK, as well as the occasional keen traveller
from overseas. Our conference has the dual aim of featuring the highest
quality postgraduate work in philosophy and finding creative ways to
satisfy the expectations of current students. Our format includes a
traditional two and a half days of postgraduate philosophy conference and
an entire day devoted to career preparation. For more information on the
BPPA see http://www.bppa-online.org/

Now in its 18th year, we are pleased to announce that the BPPA Annual
Conference and Careers Day will take place at the University of Leeds, 9-12
September 2014. The Leeds team is working hard to make it the best it can
be!

This first advert is to encourage all PG students to note the dates in
their diaries. There will be a call for abstracts soon!

*PG paper presentation:*
PG speakers will each have one hour; the format of allotment being 40
minutes for the presentation itself, continued by a 5-10 minute response
from a designated peer PG student and brought to a close with general Q & A
for the remaining time. Papers will have to be ready and submitted at least
two weeks before the event, to provide enough time for the respondent to
read the material and to think about observations, critiques, feedback,
etc. This format has worked very well in other PG events, such as the White
Rose Philosophy PG Forum meetings (
http://www.york.ac.uk/philosophy/research/wrppf/). It has the dual effect
of training the speaker, as well as the respondent in presentation. The
respondent will not necessarily be specialised in the area of the paper
they will respond to (although it will be in their area of competence); on
one hand, this will encourage the speaker to make a concerted effort to
clearly present their point of view and, on the other hand, encourage the
respondent to widen and strengthen their areas of competence.

*Some useful dates to have in mind:*
April: Call for abstracts
June: Deadline for submitting abstracts
June/July: Communication of decision, Call for respondents
July: Registration Opening

*Finances:*
The Organising Committee is keen to keep things as inexpensive as possible.
Partial subsidies for registration fee, accommodation and travel costs are
expected, although it is also expected that delegates will have to make
some contribution toward attending the event.

*Participation:*
All PG students in Philosophy are welcome to submit abstracts for selection
in due course.
All PG students at a Philosophy department are encouraged to attend this
event. The conference is open to the whole academic community.
Selection of papers will be done with the aim of representing as many areas
of philosophy as possible.
We aim to be representative of the diversity of race, gender, age, etc,
within academic philosophy.

*Sponsorships:*
The Organising Committee wishes to acknowledge the following sponsors: The
School of Philosophy, Religion and the History of Science at Leeds;
Analysis Trust; The British Society for Ethical Theory; and The British
Society for the Philosophy of Science.

We will give out more information in April.
