Schopenhauer’s Fourfold Root: 200 Years On

Saturday 22nd November 2014, Keele University (UK)

Keynote speaker: Sebastian Gardner (UCL)

Supported by the Research Institute for Social Sciences/The School of Politics, IR & Philosophy (SPIRE) – Keele University

With the 200th anniversary of the work passing last October, a new translation recently published by Cambridge University Press, as well as a growing appreciation of Schopenhauer’s ‘minor works’, it is time to revisit his doctoral dissertation and first publication, On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason. This event will not only mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Fourfold Root, but will also be a precursor to the official launch of the ‘Keele Centre for Kantian Studies’ on the 28/29 November (see the ‘Philosophy@Keele’ blog http://philosophyk.wordpress.com/ for more details on the launch).

We invite abstracts from prospective participants to give 30 minute presentations on any aspect of Schopenhauer’s Fourfold Root. Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

  • ·        Schopenhauer’s treatment of the ‘Principle of Sufficient Reason’
  • ·        Schopenhauer on concepts and abstraction
  • ·        Idealism in the Fourfold Root
  • ·        The Fourfold Root and Kant (or Hume, Spinoza, Leibniz etc.)
  • ·        Schopenhauer on the willing subject
  • ·        The Fourfold Root as prolegomena to The World as Will and Representation
  • ·        Differences between the 1st and 2nd editions (and the development of Schopenhauer’s thought)
  • ·        Schopenhauer on the traditional arguments for God’s existence
  • ·        Schopenhauer on truth

Abstracts (no more than 500 words) should be prepared for blind review and sent as an attachment to [email protected]. Please include in the body of the email the following information:

  • Name
  • Affiliation
  • Title of the paper
  • Email address

The abstract must be received by Friday 5th September (end of the day). Speakers will be notified of acceptance by the following Friday. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide funding for our speakers. Some slots will be reserved for postgraduate researchers.

Organisers:
