Society for Ricœur Studies Fall Conference
Graduate Students and New Scholars Roundtable:
“Ricœur in the 21st Century”
October 24-26 2014
New Orleans, Louisiana

The Society for Ricœur Studies invites graduate students and new scholars to submit paper proposals for this year’s roundtable on the topic of “Paul Ricœur in the 21st Century”. This year’s conference will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana concurrently with the conference of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy (SPEP), which will run October 23-25, 2014. The keynote speaker will be David Pellauer.

The corpus of Ricœur’s works traces the philosophical landscape of the 20th century, as he never ceased to reflect upon the philosophy of his own time and to critically assess it. One year after the celebration of his centenary and in the context of a growing international reception, we invite new scholars and graduate students to explore Ricœur’s main contributions to 21st Century thought and its new philosophical developments. Did Ricœur anticipate some of the new developments in political and social philosophy, analytical philosophy or cognitivism, for instance? Can Ricœur’s own contributions to the fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology and so many others help us to build our own critical framework and assess these new developments? And in what ways did Ricœur influence the way we think today in philosophy and the human and social sciences?

This topic is broadly construed and many questions can therefore be addressed within it. Our aim is to help disclose some of the possible future directions in Ricœur studies.  Proposals dealing with a specific point in Ricœur’s philosophy (Hermeneutics, Historiography, Literary Studies, Phenomenology, Political and Social Theory, Religious Studies, and so on), or relating it with other authors or issues within this proposed topic, are equally welcome.
