Every year, the Inland Northwest Philosophy Conference (INPC) is held with the aim of bringing scholars from around the world to the beautiful Northwest to discuss philosophical research organized around a central theme. Recent themes have included: the relationship between law, language, and pragmatism; contemporary metaphysics; the environment; and natural kinds in science (among others). The theme for the 18th INPC will be Philosophy of Science: Inside and Out.
Pioneering scientists inevitably encounter philosophical issues. For example, debates regarding the units of selection in evolutionary theory depend on how we define different levels of biological organization. This workshop is intended to facilitate discussion about issues at the boundaries of disciplines by bringing together researchers from inside scientific disciplines - scientists - and theoreticians from outside those disciplines - philosophers. In particular, the goal of the workshop is to draw from the rich regional pool of interdisciplinary scientists with a wider audience of philosophers of science.
This summer’s INPC will be jointly hosted by the University of Idaho and Washington State University. This conference is organized in a workshop-style format, allowing all participants to engage the presented research more deeply. Confirmed speakers include:
Michael O’Rourke (Michigan State) and Stephen Crowley (Boise State)
Matt Barker (Concordia University)
Hayley Clatterbuck (UW – Madison)
Josh Filler (Ripon)
Ty Fisher (UC-Davis)
Matthew Kopec (Northwestern)
Trevor Pearce (UNC-Charlotte)
Yasha Rohwer (Oregon Institute of Technology)
Larry Forney (University of Idaho)
Presentations will be held Thursday (31 July 2014) and Friday (1 August 2104). This will allow time for participants to explore the scenic Palouse on Saturday and Sunday.
