Since the publication of Stroud's classic paper of 1968, general discussions on transcendental arguments have often been received with serious reservations. At the same time, transcendental arguments continue to play a prominent role in some recent approaches to practical philosophy. Also, some authors argue that transcendental reasoning might be more promising in the context of practical philosophy than in theoretical contexts.

At this conference, moral philosophers who make use of or have a strong interest in transcendental arguments will meet experts in the structure and the challenges of transcendental reasoning. The dialogue between them may help to clarify the potential of transcendental reasoning in the field of moral philosophy.

The following questions demand attention:

1.What characterizestranscendental arguments in practical philosophy?

2.  What different types of transcendental argumentation can be discerned (for example, explorative versus retorsive, competence-related versus action-related, monological or first-personal versus dialogical or second-personal)?

3.What are the most promising departure points for transcendental reasoning in practical philosophy:  Action? The capacity for action? Normative identity? Argumentation? Putting forth a normative aim?

4.Can transcendental arguments in practical philosophy be exposed to similar objections as in theoretical philosophy or are there relevant differences?

5.Is it possible to establish clear-cut, morally substantial propositions by means of transcendental arguments?

6.What degree of truth and/or certainty can be achieved by employing transcendental arguments?
