CFP: Argumentation and Advocacy: Twenty Years of Visual Argument

Submission deadline: April 1, 2015

Details

Argumentation and Advocacy invites submissions for a special anniversary issue on visual argument titled “Twenty Years of Visual Argument.” The issue, scheduled to be published in 2016, will celebrate and extend the groundbreaking work on visual argument that appeared in the journal’s 1996 (double) issue on visual argument. Since that time, visual argument has become a central topic in argumentation theory and been featured in presented papers and published articles that explore case studies and investigate the possibility of a theory of visual argument. The special issue editors invite articles that outline what argumentation scholars can learn from the last twenty years of work. In particular, we are interested in articles that address theoretical considerations, helping frame a coherent theoretical account of visual argument (and possibly other multi-modal forms of argument). We welcome theoretical contributions that illustrate their point with concrete examples of visual argument and their use. We are committed to having the special issue represent the wide range of scholarly traditions that engage visual argument including, but not limited to, informal logic, philosophy, and rhetoric.

Questions about the special issue may be directed to the guest editors:

Argumentation and Advocacy submission guidelines apply to the special issue (seewww.argumentationandadvocacy.com/guidelines for more information). Essays will be subject to peer review and will be competitively selected. Submissions should be made via the on-line submission portal (see www.argumentationandadvocacy.com). When submitting author information, indicate your essay is intended for the special issue on visual argument. When uploading your manuscript on the web portal, title the document SISVisArg_your title. The submission deadline is April 1, 2015.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout, including long quotations, notes, and references. On a separate page, include an abstract of no more than 120 words with a list of five suggested key words. Notes, references, tables and figures should appear on separate pages following the text. The title of the essay (without the author’s name) should repeat on the first page of the manuscript. Text should be left-justified only. Paragraphs should be longer than a single sentence. Manuscripts should not exceed 25 pages (or about 6,500 words) excluding cover page, abstract, references, notes, tables, and appendices.

Manuscripts should be prepared using Microsoft Word format (doc or docx), and conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed., 2009 (http://www.apastyle.org). An exception is that classical sources should be cited in text without dates (e.g., Aristotle, Rhetoric, I.1.1354a). Please note that surname prefixes such as der or von are ignored in alphabetizing the reference list (e.g., van Eemeren is alphabetized by “E” not “v”). Content endnotes may be used, but should be kept to a minimum. Upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication, authors should be prepared to furnish photocopies of all quotations for verification purposes, and to provide a final version of the essay in both hard and digital form, including camera-ready copy for artwork and figures. Authors of accepted papers will be responsible for obtaining and paying for permission to use any images included in the paper.

Manuscripts submitted to Argumentation and Advocacy obligate the author to grant exclusive right of review to this journal until such time as s/he receives the results of our review. Essays that have been published previously in their entirety in other sources should not be submitted; essays that have been published previously in part (e.g., in the Alta proceedings) should be substantially revised before submission and the original version should also be sent to the editor. Upon acceptance, copyright should be assigned to the American Forensic Association.
