Errors and mistakes: so wot?

Wednesday 23rd October 2014 5.15-6.45pm followed by a drinks reception

Senior Common Room, St Mary’s University, Twickenham

Abstract

This talk will serve as an introduction to this year’s series on Error, and will ask key questions about the nature of concepts like error, mistakes, and failure. Alongside this we’ll think about questions of risk, consequence and accountability. Some key examples from science, technology and politics will be explored, alongside delightful mistakes and errors from a range of philosophers.

About the Speaker

Yasemin is the Programme Director for Philosophy at St Mary’s University, and her research interests range from interdisciplinary (with science and technology) to philosophy of language, aesthetics, and ethics. Her most recent publications include topics in thinking, agency and recognition; Neural implants and human identity, and; nanovaccines and global equity. She has recently guest edited a symposium issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies, and has been a committee member of the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and the Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) since 2012. In her spare time she is unavoidably committed to watching too many disappointing football games.

Registration

All lectures are free and open to the public without registration. Lectures start at 5.15pm and last for 45 minutes, with 45 minutes for questions and further discussion. This is then followed by a wine reception.
