What is Education?

The Eastern Division of the Society for Women in Philosophy invites answers to the question “What is Education?” to be presented at the 2015 annual conference to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas on the 16th and 17th of April 2015.

Keynote Speaker:  Alison Jaggar

The Society for Women in Philosophy, Eastern Division, welcomes proposals for 30-minute presentations on all topics bearing on the conference theme, including responses to the following questions:

a.     What are the aims of education in the 21st century?

b.     What is the role of feminist pedagogy in the current climate of higher education?

c.     In what ways is feminist pedagogy different from “traditional” pedagogical approaches?

d.     How does education enable and empower marginalized populations?

e.     What are the critical intersections between capitalism, racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression and education?

f.      How ought feminist philosophers respond to the current political assault on critical thinking?

g.     How is education both the solution to hegemony as well as a potential agent of its continued persistence?

h.     Is education a site of political resistance?

We encourage papers from a wide range of traditions intersecting with this theme: Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Emotion, Phenomenology, Queer Theory, Disability Studies, Environmental Philosophy, Post-Colonial Studies, among others.

Abstracts should be sent by the 15th of January 2015 to: Roxy Green ([email protected]), and Allison Merrick ([email protected]) with the following subject line:
