In this paper, I propose an account of attention that answers three questions: (1) What is the nature of attention? (2) What is the relationship between attention and consciousness? (3) What is the epistemic role of attention? I also discuss the bearing of this account on various empirical phenomena, including blindsight, inattentional blindness, visual crowding, and the binding problem.
