CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers from all areas of philosophy are welcome on the topics of the good life and the good death, broadly construed. Papers may address aspects of the good life, for example the place of work in the good life, and/or the meaning of a "good death," We seek submissions of the highest philosophical quality, which will be given a blind review. Funding for this conference is provided by the James Hervey Johnson Foundation's Critical Thinking Grants Program in the San Diego State University College of Arts and Letters.
Sample Topics
Sample topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Does the good life require personal happiness?
- What is the role of the family in securing the good life?
- If meaningful work is a condition of human well-being, what responsibility do we have to ensure that people have it?
- What form of education is best suited for producing well-being in a liberal democratic society?
- Can death ever be a good thing for the person who dies?
- Is suicide justifiable?
- Is the fact that most people in the developed world die in hospitals a cause for moral concern?
Deadlines
Submission of abstracts: Feb 1, 2015
Notification of acceptance: Feb 15, 2015
Format
Abstracts only (750 word limit). Double spaced, prepared for blind review.
Anticipate 30 minute presentation times.
