A book colloquium on Wittgenstein's Whewell's Court Lectures, Cambridge 1938-1941 (Wiley-Blackwell, forthcoming), will take place from 30 March to 1 April 2015 at the AAU Klagenfurt, Austria. The edition of these unpublished lectures is based on notes taken by Yorick Smythies (1917-1980), who served as a major source for earlier publications of Wittgenstein's lectures. The aim of the book colloquium is, on the one hand, to contexutalise the Whewell's Court Lectures within Wittgenstein's Nachlass and published writings, and on the other hand, to clarify their relationship to the authors discussed in the lectures, in particular B. Russel, G. E. Moore, K. Gödel, W. James, D. Hume, but also Y. Smythies, the note-taker (in "Wittgenstein's Reply to a Paper by Y. Smythies on 'Understanding'").

Speakers are: Juliet Floyd (Boston MA), Lars Hertzberg (Abo/Turku), Ilse Somavilla (Innsbruck), Wolfgang Kienzler (Jena), James Klagge (Blacksburg VA), Ray Monk (Southampton), Gabriele Mras (Vienna), Felix Mühlhölzer (Göttingen), Volker Munz (Klagenfurt), Alois Pichler (Bergen), Bernhard Ritter (Klagenfurt), Josef Rothaupt (Munic), Severin Schroeder (Reading), Joachim Schulte (Zurich), David Stern (Iowa City IA).

Contact and Organisation: Volker Munz ([email protected]) and Bernhard Ritter ([email protected])
