Details

Philosophy students’ organization of Center for Croatian Studies of University of Zagreb “Scopus” invites you to apply for the 12. International Students’ Philosophy Conference – “Philosophy and the Daily Life”. The conference will be held on the 9th and 10th of April, 2015, at the Center for Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb, Borongajska 83d (Campus Borongaj).

People unengaged with philosophy often lack understanding of its role in contemporary (social) context. Philosophy was, throughout history, characterized as unnecessary, redundant and complicate, and its influence gradually diminished. On the other hand, those philosophically engaged claim this is not true, but that philosophy contributes to our daily lives – from morals and politics, to science and medicine. The goal of the upcoming conference is to evaluate the contribution of philosophy to our daily life. The subject is open to all philosophical schools and disciplines, and thus it opens a lot of possibilities for the prospective presenters.

Here we offer a list of topics that will be of central focus: righteousness of democratic systems, changeability of ethical theories, critical thinking and education, philosophy in daily discussion – fallacies in argumentation, logic in daily use, popular philosophy, philosophy of mind and mental illnesses, cognitive science and influencing people’s decision making process, digitalization and human autonomy, political philosophy and economic systems, ethics of the patient-doctor rights, modern physics and the common image of reality (nature), ethics of health resources distribution, ethics of climate change and climate engineering.

These fields are only suggestions and the students are encouraged to apply with subjects which do not fall into the suggested fields.

[APPLICATION] Graduate, undergraduate, and PhD students are all eligible for application to the conference. Official languages of the conference are Croatian and English. Presenters will have 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by a 10 minute discussion. Presentations can be given by individuals or by groups. For those who do not live in Zagreb we can arrange accommodation in a hostel and lunches during the conference. Unfortunately, we cannot cover your traveling expenses, but we will be glad to help you find the cheapest way of traveling to Zagreb.

To apply, you should write an abstract (300-500 words) in which you should explain your main thesis and the way in which you will defend it. Also you should fill out our form and send both documents to the address [email protected] not later than 5th of March 2015. Applicants will be informed of our decision by e-mail not later than 10th of March 2015. For all questions, comments and suggestions please contact us on the above e-mail address.
