U.S. Midwest heads east for the Fall 2015 Conference!

October 9, 10, and 11 at Washington College, Chestertown Maryland

Call for Abstracts:

The Midwest U.S. Division of the Society for Women in Philosophy invites papers in all areas of feminist philosophy, theory, and praxis, including but not limited to ethics, social/political philosophy, phenomenology, existentialism, epistemology, and metaphysics. U.S. Midwest SWIP is especially interested in enriching discussions about contemporary social and political issues, and we welcome work that explicitly interrogates how such issues intersect with race, gender, ability, and class.

Potential themes include:

- Mass Incarceration, Cradle-to-prison Pipeline, and Carceral Feminisms

- Police and State Violence against People of Color and Trans* People

- Coloniality and Decolonial Methodologies

- Queer/Crip Theory and Disability Studies

- Insurrectional Political Action and Uprisings

- Reproductive Justice

- Climate Change, the Anthropocene, and Muzzling/Silencing of Climate Research

- Indigeneity and Indigenous Rights

- Immigration, Assimilation, and Statelessness

- Austerity Measures and Neoliberalism

- Food Justice and Food Politics

- Social Epistemology, esp. investigations into and critical readings of epistemology of ignorance and epistemology of resistance literature

- The nature and consequences of thinking of identity in a pluralist and/or multiplicitous way

The program committee gives preference to women and members of other marginalized groups who are working on feminist projects that engage multiple axes of oppression. We also welcome the work of scholars at any stage in their careers.

Submission Guidelines:

We invite panel/workshop proposals and individual paper submissions. Please send all submissions as MS word documents, and include as a separate attachment, a cover page with the title, institutional affiliation, rank or occupation, and email address of the presenters or panelists to: [email protected] by July 31st, 2015.

- For panel/workshop proposals, please submit a 500-word general description of the panel/workshop theme, and 500-word abstracts for panel presentations or a 500-word outline for the proposed activities of the workshop.

- For individual submissions, please submit an extended abstract of 800-1000 words (We will also accept full paper submissions of no more than 3000 words).

About the Area:

Located on the Maryland Eastern Shore, Washington College was founded in 1782. Now approximately 1450 students from 33 states and 22 nations share the 112-acre campus. Neighboring Chestertown (http://townofchestertown.com/) was founded on the shore of the Chester River in 1706. The College and Chestertown are surrounded by farm land and the county borders the Chesapeake Bay.  Though situated in a rural county, Washington College is only 90 minutes from Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Travel and Lodging:

- Quality Suites (160 Scheeler Rd., Chestertown, MD 21620, Phone:  (410) 810-0555) has a block of rooms for "SWIP at Washington College."  The nightly rate is 95.99 + tax.  Options are rooms with one king bed or rooms with two queen beds.  In order to secure the SWIP rate, please book before Sept 9th, 2015.

- The two major airports in relative proximity are Philadelphia International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Airport.  Since Washington College is 90 minutes from either airport and some will not want to rent a car, we will offer one free Friday eveningshuttle from Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) to the College.  Also, Sunday afternoon we have organized a shuttle from the College to BWI.  Estimated shuttle departure from BWI will be 6pm, Friday Oct 9th.  Estimated arrival at BWI will be 2pm Sunday Oct 11th. RSVP to Jennifer Benson [email protected] so we know who will need the shuttle.

- Those who will attend the conference out of pocket, and need free lodging, please contact Jennifer Benson at [email protected]. We do have some guest accommodations on campus that will be free of charge, though the spots are limited.

- If you intend to fly, please take advantage of the free SWIP shuttle to and from the College.
