Northern New England Philosophical Association 2015 Conference

Our distinguished keynote speaker will be Catherine Elgin, Professor of the Philosophy of Education at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. Elgin’s work focuses on epistemology, philosophy of science, and aesthetics. Her research draws together the arts and sciences; she has written on the similarities between metaphor in the arts and idealizations in science – and the challenge this provides to the assumption that truth is necessary for epistemic acceptability. In Considered Judgment (Princeton University Press, 1996), Elgin argues that reflective equilibrium should be the standard of rational acceptability. Her other books include With Reference to Reference (Hackett 1983), Between the Absolute and the Arbitrary (Cornell 1997), Reconceptions in Philosophy & Other Arts & Sciences, co-authored with Nelson Goodman (Hackett 1988), and a four-volume set on Goodman’s work.

She has recently published on epistemic virtue, the connection between emotion and understanding, skepticism, disagreement, knowing-how, ethics and science education, and on dance and the exemplification of understanding. Papers may be on any topic, but should be limited to 25 minutes reading time. Send abstracts (500- 750 words) and/or papers (suitable for 25 minute presentations) by August 1, 2015 to:

Papers dealing with any of the work of Professor Catherine Elgin are especially welcome, and will be considered for a possible Saturday morning plenary session devoted to her work.

In conjunction with its annual conference, the Northern New England Philosophical Association will host a session for undergraduates to share their work in a collaborative environment. Undergrads should submit complete papers of no more than 2500 words by August 15, 2015 to:
