The University of Leeds Minorities and Philosophy chapter would like to cordially invite you to attend its first annual MAP@Leeds Conference on the 15th & 16th of October, 2015. The theme for this event is implicit and explicit bias, broadly construed.

What: MAP@Leeds Implicit Bias Conference
Where: University of Leeds, UK
When: 15-16 Oct 2015

Keynote speakers:
Jennifer Saul (Sheffield)
Jules Holroyd (Nottingham)
Ian Kidd (Durham)

Bias is prominently identified as the cause for under-representation, discrimination, and privilege. In the worthy pursuit of philosophical truth and justice "in the world", a rigorous study of biases, both implicit and explicit, provides us with the tools needed to fight this battle. In addition to our keynotes, we will be collecting high quality abstracts for papers to be presented at the event. Topics and foci that would fit well into this conference might be, among others:

The philosophy of biases [what are they, what are they for, do they serve a purpose] The ethics of bias [are biases good or vicious, how can we morally develop the right kinds of biases] The politics of bias [how do biases reflect in national conversations and war] The role of bias in art and the understanding of beauty Philosophical differences between implicit and explicit bias Questions around whether bias holders should be held accountable and/or punished Questions regarding collective bias and responsibility   CFA: Abstracts should be prepared for blind review and range between 400-600 words. Submissions are to be mailed [email protected] by July 25, 2015. Abstracts will be reviewed by an external diversified selection committee and an acceptance notification should go out on or before 31 August 2015. Queries are welcome. We ask that submissions be in a standard file format (no cloud services please). It should go without saying, but we highly encourage submissions from all philosophers and postgraduates, especially those that are traditionally under-represented.
Funding: We are delighted to be able offer partial reimbursement for accommodations and subsistence to postgraduates thanks to generous funding from the Analysis Trust (up to 50% of costs on a first comers basis). We would also like to thank the University of Leeds Interdisciplinary Ethics Applied Centre, the Aristotelian Society, Mind Association, and MAP for their continued support.

We aim to run an inclusive and accessible event. Should you have any specific requirements, please contact the conference organizers and we will do our very best to accommodate your needs.
