Metodo. International Studies in Phenomenology and Philosophy

Although it is not difficult to track reflections and discussions on the theory and practice of linguistic research within the phenomenological corpus – from Husserl to Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger or Derrida, and passing through authors such as Adolf Reinach, Karl Bühler, Hendrik Pos and Gustav Špet – the relationship between linguistic investigation and phenomenological
tradition has rarely been made the subject of detailled and exclusive analyses. True, an exception is constituted by a line of research that can be basically traced back to two pioneering works published by Elmar Holenstein in the 1970s – namely Roman Jakobson phänomenologischer Strukturalismus of 1975 and Linguistik Semiotik Hermeneutik. Plädoyers fu?r eine strukturale Phänomenologie of 1976 – which aim to demonstrate the existence of a theoretical and historical filiation between Husserl’s phenomenology and the works of Roman Jakobson and of the other members of the Prague Linguistic Circle and, hence, between phenomenology and structural linguistics. However, although these works were conducive to a lively debate and paved the way for further inquiries on this topic, the scientific studies resulting therefrom are quite few in number. Another exception is represented by a recently emerged concern about the relationship between phenomenology and cognitive linguistics but, here again, studies on this subject can really be counted on the fingers of one’s hand.
Given this state of affairs, this issue of Metodo aims to foster and promote studies on the historical and theoretical interrelations between “the phenomenological movement” and modern and contemporary linguistics, in the belief that this can be of great help both for phenomenological research and for linguistics, especially with reference to fundamental theoretical questions concerning language and its study, which evidently have an essential relevance in both fields of research. Thus, topics may include, but are not limited to:

- The nature of language: phenomenological and linguistic accounts
- Phenomenology and the history of linguistics
- The epistemology of linguistics from a phenomenological point of view
- Phenomenological theories of language
- Phenomenology and applied linguistics
- Phenomenological aspects of linguistic research
- Controversial issues about language between linguists and phenomenologists
