The Uehiro Cross Currents Philosophy Conference showcases exceptional work by graduate and advanced undergraduate students in all fields of philosophy. This year’s conference will explore the intersection of language and philosophy including but not limited to such topics as: What is the nature of meaning? What is the relationship between language, meaning, and knowledge? What is the relationship between language and reality? Is translation possible, and if so how? How are extra-denotative meanings (for instance, political or figurative messages) expressed through communicative acts? How does communication through languages affect political and/or social systems? What can historical linguistic theories and perspectives contribute to contemporary debates? We welcome papers addressing these and other questions pertaining to the conference theme.

Email abstracts or full papers to [email protected]. Papers should be suitable for a 20-minute presentation. In the body of the email include: 1) Your name, 2) Title of the paper, 3) Institutional affiliation, 4) Contact information (email, phone number, mailing address), and 5) Whether you would like to be considered for a travel award. Send documents in word format with no identifying information for blind review. Preferential consideration will be given to full papers and papers with comparative themes. Notification of acceptance will be sent by January 20th, 2016. The Uehiro Student Essay Award will be presented to the best student presentation. Partial travel subsidies will be available this year for both international and domestic travel on a competitive basis. All submissions will be considered for possible publication in the Uehiro Conference Proceedings, published in the past by Cambridge Scholars Press.
