Abstract: Was the French Revolution an advance or a defeat for women? In this paper this question is discussed through an account of the ideas expressed by Louise Keralio-Robert before, during and after the revolution. A recent assessment of her political position has deemed her a pioneer of sexist republicanism of the kind promoted by Rousseau. In this paper I outline her political views, and defend her against this charge by arguing that she is more charitably interpreted as promoting a position close to that of contemporary feminists of sexual difference.
