CFP: Science and Values in Peirce and Dewey: A Conference in Honour of Angus Kerr-Lawson

This conference brings together scholars at the intersection of pragmatism and philosophy of science to consider Peirce’s and Dewey’s contributions to the study of science and values. Over three days, scholars will offer individual papers and panel/roundtable discussions devoted to both the role of and relationship between science and values in Peirce and Dewey, and to the ways in which contemporary scholarship on science and values draws, or ought to draw, on the work of these classic American pragmatists. Topics will range from the role of values in the natural and social sciences to pragmatic approaches to contemporary science policy.

Submission deadline: Tuesday, January 5, 2016. 11:59 p.m. EST.

Submission types:

Individual paper: If you wish to present a 25-30 minute individual paper at the conference, you may submit either (1) a maximum 3500 word paper and a maximum 100 word abstract, or (2) a 500 word abstract.

Panel/roundtable discussion: If you wish to organize a 90 minute panel/roundtable discussion for the conference, you may submit a 750 word abstract describing the focus of the panel/roundtable, and sketching what panel/roundtable participants will do during the session. A panel should consist of 2-4 short paper presentations, and the 750 word panel proposal should include short abstracts for each of the papers. A roundtable discussion may be a more informal moderated discussion of a specific theme or topic. In this case, the proposal need not include short abstracts for individual papers.

Abstracts should be emailed in .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf format to [email protected]. All submissions, including panel/roundtable submissions, should be prepared for anonymous review, with names and affiliations removed from both the document itself and from the document’s metadata (properties). Authors and organizers may indicate their name, affiliation, and contact information in the main body of the email accompanying their submission.

The organizers are eager to assemble a demographically diverse program. If you are a member of an underrepresented group and wish to identify yourself as such, please include this information in your email as well.

Authors may submit a maximum of one individual paper proposal and one panel/roundtable proposal. No one may participate in more than one panel/roundtable.
