Details

In the spring of 2016, the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics (GISME) will host two Junior Faculty Manuscript Workshops.

The second workshop will be held on May 20 in Hariri room 570.

Author: Daniel Halliday
Manuscript title: “Inheritance: Justice and the Right to Bequeath.”
Commentators: Anne Alstott (Yale Law School), Richard Arneson (Univ. of California, San Diego), Heidi Hurd (University of Illinois Law).

This manuscript seeks to address the question of how to regulate inherited wealth—a question now neglected in contemporary political philosophy but crucial to any account of the moral foundations of capitalism. Drawing on a mixture of ideas from the egalitarian, utilitarian and classical liberal traditions, the book argues that bequest of newly-produced wealth ought to incur less liability to taxation, compared to inheritance stemming from prior inheritance.

Each workshop will consist of several sessions dedicated to discussion of the author’s manuscript. Sessions will begin with a critical commentary on a section of the manuscript by an invited participant. The author will then have the chance to respond and subsequently open up the floor for further commentary and discussion. The format is designed to maximize feedback for the author.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, please email Michael Kates at [email protected] for a detailed schedule and copy of the manuscript.
