Details

Dear colleagues and friends,

I am pleased to announce that the conference, “Philosophical Foundations of Global Law”, will take place at the University of Cartagena, 24-27 August, 2016. Papers will be publicly presented on Wednesday and Thursday, 24 and 25 August. A closed workshop will take place on Friday, 26 August, which will involve discussion of the papers.

Following the conference, we will host a meeting of the International Network on Transnational Legal and Political Theory, on Saturday 27 August. The meeting will present an opportunity for discussion of works in progress and (if time permits) a roundtable discussion of the conference themes.

We regret that we are unable to provide funding to support travel for the conference or the Network Meeting (other than for those who have already been formally invited to the conference). We will, however, cover the conference fee for those members of the Network who are able to join us and provide refreshments for the Network meeting. We will try to cover the accommodation for some members of the Network, specially graduate students.

Further details of the conference are set out below, including a call for papers. Questions and papers should be directed to [email protected] and [email protected].

If you are interested in participating in the Network meeting, please write as soon as possible along with an abstract/working title for your discussion paper, with copy to [email protected]. If you are interested only in attending the conference and the workshop, please let us know and we will send you the registration information.

We would be delighted to welcome as many of you as are able to make the journey to Cartagena.

With best wishes,

Yezid Carrillo de la Rosa

Dean – University of Cartagena School of Law

Topic

The idea of a “global” or “Cosmopolitan” law has been popularized without much reference to or reflection upon the traditional issues of political and legal philosophy. This conference seeks to explore such questions, including (but not limited to): What do we mean by ‘global law’? How are we to account for its legal nature? Do we need new conceptual tools in order to do that? Can we claim that there is a global legal system or a global constitution? How are we to determine its content? When is global law or global constitutionalism legitimate? When is it legitimate to disobey it? How are we to understand adjudication in a global context?
