Details

Prof. Jeff Malpas’ work on the philosophy of Place has contributed to Continental and Analytic philosophy in areas diverse as Hermeneutics, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Ethics and Environmental thought. Prof. Claude Romano’s work is on phenomenology and/of the Event,  and its relation to experience harmonising phenomenology, hermeneutics and transcendental philosophy

Malpas and Romano have participated in philosophical conversations over several years. At this event, Malpas will present a paper entitled: Placing Understanding/ Understanding Place. Arguing for hermeneutics as having a topological in character, Malpas seeks to redirect the orientation of contemporary hermeneutics toward attendance upon the role of place as transcendental to understanding. Romano will respond to the paper, seeking to draw out some of the consequences of Malpas’ proposed reorientation of the hermeneutic project. Culminating in an open discussion, this meeting between two internationally recognised philosophers promises to be an energetic and thought-provoking examination of foundational issues of hermeneutics and transcendental philosophy.
