CFP: Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics Special Issue on Animal Ethics

Philosophers and ethicists have long neglected, or treated as a matter of secondary concern, questions that arise from our interaction with other animals. In recent decades, however, that has changed dramatically, and the moral status of non-human animals is now the subject of a lively academic debate. Scientists who work with non-human animals and practicing veterinarians are part of that debate as well, as they are becoming increasingly aware of, and interested in, the distinctly ethical issues at the center of their professions.

The Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics is calling for submissions in any area of animal ethics for a special issue to be published by the end of 2016. Original submissions on any aspect of the human-animal relationship are welcome, as long as there is an ethical dimension involved. Questions of interest include:

• Which values and principles should guide our interaction with other animals?
• Is there a sound justification for the common view that humans have a higher moral status than other animals, or is this a view we should no longer accept?
• When, if ever, is it morally permissible to use non-human animals as a source of food, clothing, or entertainment, or for scientific purposes?
• How should we weigh our interests against those of other animals in both moral theory-building and policy-making?
• What is the relationship between animal rights and human rights?
• What is the status of non-human animals in Indian philosophy?
• What do the teachings of major religions, such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity, say about how we ought to treat non-human animals?
• Is the primary obligation of a veterinarian to the animal patient or the caretaker?
• Does the law afford adequate protection to non-human animals?
• What are the risks and benefits of intensive animal agriculture for public health, animal welfare, and the environment? What are the moral concerns?

The Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics was founded in 2010. It is published three times a year and available both online and in print. It is widely indexed and disseminated internationally, offering authors high visibility for their work and access to a broad readership. The Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics is the official journal of the Bangladesh Bioethics Society (BBS), the only academic organization in Bangladesh exclusively dedicated to the promotion of the study of bioethics.
