DEADLINE EXTENDED!

RESISTANCE, BROADLY CONSTRUED

Ryerson University Philosophy Graduate Conference
Keynote: Dr. Bruce Gilbert (Bishop's University)
Conference Dates: March 17, 2017
Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario

“Resistance: the refusal to accept or comply with something”. Whether it is a simple interaction between two individuals or large scale social movement, resistance is a driving force for change in the world. As a social phenomenon, it comes in many different forms ranging from disagreements to the resistance of minorities in the face of oppression. This conference seeks to address this broad spectrum by opening a forum for discussion based on topics from ethics, epistemology, social and political philosophy, history of philosophy, and more.

We are particularly interested in papers that break past the boundaries of traditional approaches to the topic of resistance. Papers addressing the following topics are particularly encouraged, though this is by no means an exhaustive list:

  • The development of social movements and their impact on society
  • Analyses of social movements such as: the Stonewall protests, the Occupy Movement, or Black Lives Matter
  • The ethics / ethical implications of resistance
  • Disagreement and the epistemology of resistance
  • The role / significance / implications of lived experience
  • Are differing perspectives important when discussing rights and freedoms or when pushing for social change?

Conference papers should be presentable in 20 minutes (typically 2000-2750 words). Please submit your paper, prepared for blind review, to Jordan Wadden at [email protected]. In a second attachment please prepare a cover page with the following information: your name, your university affiliation, preferred contact information, paper title, word count (excluding works cited and notes), and a 150-200 word abstract.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: December 15th, 2016
