Description of the workshop topic

Knowing how cause and effect are related, knowing how an instrument works, knowing how pain feels, and knowing how to ride a bike – All these are cases of knowing how. But how are they related and what connects them? The workshop “The varieties of knowing how” will take place on July 6 & 7, 2017 in Essen, Germany. Taking into account not only perspectives from epistemology, but also perspectives from philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, and philosophy of mind, the workshop has two aims: (I) to explore the varieties of knowing how with an eye on the question of whether they share a common core, and (II) to shed light on the connection between knowing how and knowing why.

Confirmed speakers:

Berit Brogaard (Miami University)

Stephen Grimm (Fordham University & Cambridge University)

Insa Lawler (University of Duisburg-Essen)

Alfred Nordmann (TU Darmstadt)
