This colloquium will explore the contribution of the humanities and the social sciences to the education of medical ethics and bioethics to health professionals, biomedical researchers, and the public. The core premise of this event is that health is an interdisciplinary phenomenon, and that contemporary issues related to healthcare, health policy and medical ethics are best addressed with an interdisciplinary approach. The colloquium will be structured around four key themes:

  1. Methods of inquiry into bioethics education: an exploration of the different styles of bioethics, different approaches to the study of bioethical phenomena, and the role of the humanities, history and the social sciences in the context of bioethics education.
  2. Ethics, education and the medical researcher: an exploration of how biomedical researchers recognize and engage with ethical issues, and possible educational interventions for biomedical scientists.
  3. Curricular and structural processes in the ethics education of clinicians: this theme will address the design of curricula and implementation of ethics education by institutions, and explore the formal and informal ways in which clinicians access and implement ethics education.
  4. Ethics and public education: An exploration of the ways in which bioethics influences public policy, journalism, and the public media.

This event will bring together delegates from a range of academic and disciplinary backgrounds to foster an interdisciplinary sensibility towards healthcare and bioethics. We will welcome up to 50 delegates from philosophy, law, the social sciences, the humanities, all clinical disciplines and healthcare sciences. Because of limited numbers, we will give priority to delegates submitting an abstract.

The colloquium registration fee is £45 inclusive of public lecture, refreshments, lunch and dinner. For any enquires please contact [email protected].
