HowTheLightGetsIn, the world’s largest philosophy and music festival, is back this summer with thought-provoking debates and a fantastic range of speakers from the 23rd of May to the 2nd of June in Hay-on-Wye. This summer we’ll witness Nassim Nicholas Taleb discussing the philosophy of risk, John Searletackling the legacy of 20th century philosophy, and ethicist Baroness Onora O’Neill debating political morality with Ken Livingstone and Peter Lilley. Tackling the latest theories in everything from philosophy and art to science and politics - all set against a backdrop of live music and DJ sets from some of the UK’s most exciting emerging talent – this year’s HowTheLightGetsIn promises to be our best yet!
Here’s a peak at some of our events this summer:
Is Religion Dangerous? (Saturday 25th May 1:15pm)
Religion presents itself as a haven of peace and goodwill amid the greed and aggression of the secular world. But is this an illusion? Would it be wiser to see religion as a dangerous and authoritarian game, or do we require a plurality of belief systems to offset the monolith of scientific knowledge?
The Limits of My World (Sunday 26th May 5:30pm)
Language has been the focus of philosophical enquiry for the last century. But was the ‘linguistic turn’ a wrong turn, leading to a barren discipline without ‘real world’ influence? Is it time for a fresh approach to the big issues, or would this be a capitulation to intellectual fantasy?
Letting Go (Saturday 1st June 10:30am)Ours is a consumer society. We work in order to buy, and measure our success in possessions. Is this a tragic error? Should we seek to free ourselves from our attachment to material things as a route to happiness, or is this just an opiate for the unsuccessful?

‘A storming success’ (The New Scientist)
‘Europe’s answer to TED’ (Total Politics)
