About the conference:
\nThe abstract character of mathematics raises difficult philosophical questions as to the nature and existence of mathematical entities\, such as numbers\, functions\, sets\, groups\, graphs\, and number systems. \; This conference will explore such questions from the perspective of two different traditional approaches\, viz. &ldquo\;mathematical structuralism&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;mathematical fictionalism&rdquo\;. The main objective of the conference is to re-evaluate these perspectives and to consider the relationship between them. \; Specifically\, the following research questions will be addressed in the conference:
\n- Do either structuralism or fictionalism offer a philosophically viable foundation for modern mathematics?
\n- To what extent are structuralism and fictionalism faithful to mathematical practice?
\n- What are the connections between the structuralist and fictionalist approaches to the philosophy of mathematics?
\n- How do mathematicians think about meaning\, reference\, and truth in mathematics?
\nParticipation Cost:  \; Free admission. Everybody is welcome. \; \;
\nCall for Abstracts:  \; We invite the submission of abstracts\, suitable for a 60 minute talk (including time for questions)\, on topics related to structuralism and fictionalism in the philosophy of mathematics\, including mathematical practice. \; Please send an abstract of around 1000-1500 words by email to john.wigglesworth@york.ac.uk in PDF format. \; Abstracts should be prepared for blind review. \; The author&rsquo\;s name\, paper title\, institutional affiliation\, and contact details should be included in the body of the email. \; Some priority will be given to early career researchers\, including PhD students. \; If you believe you fall into this category\, please indicate this in your submission email.  \;
\nSpeakers will be invited to contribute papers to a peer-reviewed special issue of Philosophia Mathematica on topics related to structuralism and fictionalism in the philosophy of mathematics and mathematical practice. \; \;
\nDates and Deadlines:  \;
\nSubmission deadline: 1 March 2024
\nNotification of acceptance: 15 March 2024
\nRegistration deadline: 1 May\, 2024
\nConference: 13 &ndash\; 14 May 2024
