8395,"Paul Ricoeur and the Future of the Humanities ","
The University of Groningen, The Radboud University Nijmegen and The Young Academy organize a conference on the impact of Ricoeur in the Humanities. This conference will take place in Groningen, the Netherlands, June 27-29, 2013.

Conference theme

In the realm of the humanities, Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is widely viewed as one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. He published many important books and articles which made an impact on almost all areas of the humanities, including history, linguistics, literary studies, theology and philosophy.

In his works, Ricoeur combined the resources and insights of phenomenology and hermeneutics. In line with this double focus, he came to see ‘the text’ as a paradigm for addressing important historical, ethical and philosophical problems. This enabled him, among other things, to recast the problem of personal identity in terms of narrative emplotment; or to consider human action as a meaningful whole that is structured as a text.

However, in the last decades, the vast expansion of new media (video installations, social networks, games, etc.) is rapidly changing the landscape of the humanities, making it entirely different from the text-oriented culture in which Ricoeur was working. In addition, new research approaches like genetics and cognitive science, penetrate the humanities and introduce alternative paradigms which, at first sight, seem to be more in tune with the spirit of the times. Furthermore, considering the increasing marginalization of the humanities in many countries, their future course is far from self-evident. Under pressure of the financial crisis and a changing political reality, the humanities have to find new arguments for legitimating their existence and proving their importance.

Cultural, scientific and political developments like this, challenge Ricoeur’s perspective, but also create opportunities to keep his work alive and develop it in new and unforeseen directions. By means of this conference, we hope to confront present-day concerns with Ricoeur’s fruitful insights in order to help envision a future for the humanities.

Thus the aim of this conference is to investigate what Ricoeur’s extensive oeuvre has to offer in rethinking and re-imagining the humanities. We will do this by focusing on three domains of questions.

1. Questions of interpretation

How do we have to (re)locate Ricoeur’s work in relation to the humanities? Which of Ricoeur’s major contributions can be expected to remain relevant for the humanities? Etc.

2. Questions of discussion and context

In what way can we relate Ricoeur’s oeuvre to ideas and methods of other philosophers and scientists? Does Ricoeur’s paradigm of the text still provide a relevant framework for thinking about the basic questions that concern the humanities? If so, how can we bring Ricoeur’s perspective in a fruitful tension or dialogue with other, competing paradigms? Etc.

3. Questions of application

How can Ricoeur’s attributions to the humanities be adapted (if necessary) and applied to the new and changing situation of contemporary humanities? What are the possibilities and problems that we will have to explore while further elaborating on Ricoeur’s contributions to the humanities? Can we derive arguments and insights from Ricoeur that will improve our understanding of the contemporary situation of the humanities? Etc.

We are planning to publish a selection of the papers of this conference in a proceedings collection.

Herbert Simon (June 15, 1916 – February 9, 2001) was a polymath of the highest order, making significant contributions to sociology, political science, behavioral economics, epistemology, cognitive science, public administration, economics, organization theory and complexity studies. With ever narrowing specialization we may never (at least in our lifetime) see another intellect as genuinely polymathic as Simon. We take the view that Simon’s lifelong project is analogous to Adam Smith in the sense that just as Smith wrote about both Man’s inner life (Theory of Moral Sentiments) and his outer life (Wealth of Nations) so too did Simon in many of his publications. Our book will include chapters on Simon’s theory of mind, theory of rationality and his work on organizations and markets (the latter connoted by milieux of our tripartite title). We welcome proposals on all aspects of Simon’s work (but especially philosophy of mind/CogSci), be it his contribution to a single topic, a single field, or his interdisciplinary influence. Papers should include some – as long or as short as best befits your paper – historical perspective on Simon’s writings. What was the conventional wisdom on your paper’s topic when Simon undertook his research; what was Simon’s contribution to the topic and how did the change the conventional wisdom, if at all, and; how has his work influenced research in the field. Chapters dealing with some neglected aspect of Simon’s legacy would be welcome as well. The deadline for sending a proposal is July 1, 2013. We anticipate having the book published in 2016, the centenary of Simon’s birth. 8834,"Deleuze Studies Conference 2013","
Traditionally, the concept of territory emerged both from the ethology of animal aggression and from a geopolitics of nations and their borders. Against this double root, the works of Deleuze/Guattari aimed for the idea of a transcendental earth, where expression is previous to aggression, and deterritorialized people more fundamental than any nation. Territory becomes a fundamental concept for several domains of thought. From this expressive conception of nature, the concept of territory and the twin concept of deterritorialization, allowed an immense theoretical shift beyond its strictly biological context, expanding its operative to a multitude of political, epistemological, aesthetic or anthropological problems.

This conference intends to think all those problems, departing from the concept of territory, and spreading to its multiple political, aesthetic, and scientific ramifications. But it intends to do so in a transversal way, excavating through all its more intriguing hiding places, and exploring all its possibilities, intricacies, configurations and connections. With this, we aim not only to deepen our knowledge of Deleuze's theoretical legacy, but more importantly, to think the current moment in politics, art, metaphysics and science. In order to do so, this conference aims to bring together a wide range of researchers in philosophy, science, art and politics.

Gödel’s writings published during his lifetime show his dual interest in scientific questions and in fundamental philosophical questions. The posthumous publication of certain manuscripts and talks enables one better to understand this double interest in science and in philosophy. On the one hand, Gödel developed most of his scientific results in order to solve or clarify certain philosophical questions. On the other hand, his scientific work in the foundations of mathematics and in cosmology enriched his philosophical thought on, for example, the a priori classification of philosophical systems, and on the relations between the notions of concept and object. Hence, not only did Gödel, as is well known, believe that philosophy might become an exact theory, provided that one does for metaphysics what Newton did for physics; he should moreover be aligned with Descartes, Leibniz, and other early modern philosophers who believed that science and philosophy are inseparable.

The conference will explore several features of Gödel’s philosophy that emerge from the unpublished manuscripts Max-Phil, which have been partly transcribed by the research group directed by Gabriella Crocco at CEPERC (Université Aix-Marseille). The presentation of the complete transcriptions of Max-Phil IX-XV will be accompanied by an exploration of Gödel’s philosophy of logic, mathematics, and physics by international specialists and young Gödel scholars.

The North American Levinas Society is excited to announce that our eighth annual meeting and conference will take place July 28-July 31, 2013 at Duquesne University on the theme, “Emmanuel Levinas and Interreligious Dialogue.” As “culture wars” and regional conflicts around the world continue to enlist various religious traditions and worldviews, it seems timely to open robust, deliberative meditations on how Emmanuel Levinas’ “ethics as first philosophy” might help shape edifying interreligious dialogue for building peace and justice. We hope that scholars use this conference to take part in the ongoing conversation about the ramifications of Levinas’ thought for various faith and non-faith traditions. Although preference will be given to papers that address the conference theme, it is Society custom to consider papers and panels on any topic related to the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Our eight annual conference program will continue to include important Society traditions such as our annual Talmudic Reading from Georges Hansel, a pedagogy session, Society banquet, a film screening, and provocative plenary presentations from James Marsh, Leah Kalmanson, and others.

9581,"Schelling and Naturphilosophie","
Call for Applications

We are pleased to announce the Pittsburgh Summer Symposium in Contemporary Philosophy, held at Duquesne University. Details for the program are as follows:

Schelling and Naturphilosophie

August 5 - 9, 2013 (Optional Participants’ Conference, August 3-4)

“What then is that secret bond which couples our mind to Nature, or that hidden organ through which Nature speaks to our mind or our mind to Nature?” (Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature)

“The concept of nature does not entail that there should also be an intelligence that is aware of it. Nature, it seems, would exist, even if there were nothing that was aware of it. Hence the problem can also be formulated thus: how does intelligence come to be added to nature, or how does nature come to be presented?” (System of Transcendental Idealism)

Seminar Leaders:

Prof. Iain Hamilton Grant (University of the West of England, Bristol)

Prof. Jason Wirth (Seattle University)

Course Description:

In recent years there has been a surge of research on the work of the German philosopher F.W.J. Schelling, aided in the English-speaking world by a number of recent translations. This movement has included reexaminations of Schelling as a figure in the history of philosophy, as a source of influence on a number of twentieth century thinkers, and as a rich resource for addressing contemporary philosophical debates.

Schelling’s distinctive influence in the history of philosophy has been, in part, a product of his objective approach to transcendental idealism. In opposition to Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre, which argued that the subject must be the fundamental ground for transcendental idealism, Schelling argued that an objective approach, taking the form of Naturphilosophie, is equally necessary for explaining the subject-object form of knowledge. Additionally, in his later works, Schelling’s concepts of freedom, existence, and the non-ground, would give some of the earliest critiques of Hegel’s absolute idealism, and would later influence thinkers like Kierkegaard, Marx, and Nietzsche. In the twentieth century, the impact of his work would continue. His Freiheitsschrift, for instance, forms an important part of the conceptual context within which Martin Heidegger developed his notions of event, ground, and the plight of the human being, operative in the 1930s and early 40s. Likewise, Schelling’s influence profoundly marked Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s later ontology of the flesh, his understanding of art, the unconscious, and the provocative task of doing a “psychoanalysis of Nature.”

More recently, Iain Hamilton Grant has mobilized Schellingian Naturphilosophie as a basis for recasting epistemological and metaphysical or ontological issues regarding the relation of physics and metaphysics, the nature of time, the nature of ground, and more broadly calling for a radical reevaluation of the post-Kantian philosophical framework dominant over much of the last two centuries. This project has established one of the major arms of the recent movement to rethink the realist/anti-realist debate. Likewise, Jason Wirth has revitalized Schellingian accounts of the Good, intellectual intuition, aesthetics, nature, and life in contemporary debates. He has also worked to put Schelling into conversation with a number of other recent thinkers, both Western and, notably, of the Japanese Kyoto School.

Other contemporary philosophers have also taken up Schelling in related manners. Markus Gabriel, for instance, has integrated Schelling’s notion of non-ground into his “domain ontology” and its treatment of the nature of the world (or more properly the non-existence of the world), mythology, evil, contingency, and necessity. Further, in the Lacanian meta-psychology of Slavoj Žižek and Adrian Johnston, Schelling’s philosophy has been used to give an account for the genesis of the transcendental subject out of natural and material substance conceived with reference to Trieb, or drive.

This summer symposium will bring together interested graduate students, postdoctoral students, and junior faculty for a week of discussion, lecture, and close textual study concerning this important philosopher. The topic for the seminar is Schelling's Naturphilosophie. We will examine questions about nature, objectivity, matter, life, knowledge, and whether or not transcendental philosophy can be reconciled with the findings of the empirical sciences. All texts and discussion will be in English.

Application:

We invite current graduate students, postdoctoral students, and junior faculty in philosophy or related disciplines to submit an application composed of a C.V. and a short letter of intent (500 words maximum) to pghsummersymposium2013@gmail.com. The deadline for applications is April 5, 2013. The seminar will be limited to 20-30 participants. For more information as it becomes available, we have created a website for the symposium:

http://pghsummersymposium.wix.com/pghsummersymp2013

Participants’ Conference (August 3-4):

In order to facilitate a further exchange of ideas and research, a participants’ conference will be held the weekend before the seminar begins. Applicants who receive notice of acceptance as participants will be asked - if interested - to submit an abstract of up to 500 words on any theme related to the topic of the seminar. The participants’ conference will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4, 2013.

Financial Information:

There will be a $125 registration fee for each participant of the seminar. This money will be used for a conference dinner, celebration, and daily expenses such as coffee, etc. Please note that participants will be responsible for arranging their own housing as well as financing most of their own meals for the duration of the symposium. However, with respect to lodging, we expect a number of arrangements with graduate students will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
","Conference or similar","Pittsburgh Summer Symposium in Contemporary Philosophy ","James Bahoh","Department of Philosophy, Duquesne University","Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States","","","-79.9913","40.4373","External Site","http://pghsummersymposium.wix.com/pghsummersymp2013","http://pghsummersymposium.wix.com/pghsummersymp2013","6-4-2013 13:45 EDT","true","","","","","philevents5005","5-8-2013 0:0 EDT","9-8-2013 17:0 EDT"

After more than sixty years since Wittgenstein’s death in 1951, despite large agreement as to his seminal influence on 20th century philosophy, scholars still disagree widely about the aims, contents, and methods of his philosophising. Likewise Wittgenstein research has come to maintain a position disconnected from philosophical research generally, and often seems neglected both by analytic and continental philosophy.

The event pursues two main goals. The first is to identify the unique character, that is, the distinctive method and style of Wittgenstein’s philosophy, which has struck so many as highly revolutionary, yet which also appears to be one of the main reasons for its recalcitrance to being employed in contemporary philosophy. The second is to explore the contemporary significance of Wittgenstein’s thoughts on his main areas of concern: language, psychology, and mathematics, their interrelatedness within Wittgenstein’s work and with his distinctive way of investigating philosophical questions.
","Conference or similar","","Sebastian Greve","Department of Philosophy, Birkbeck, University of London","London, England, United Kingdom","","","-1.28059998E11","5.1521902E12","E-Mail","","http://www.bbk.ac.uk/philosophy/our-research/the-too-early-wittgenstein","","","","","","","philevents4520","9-9-2013 9:0 BST","10-9-2013 17:0 BST"

The second Later German Philosophy conference will look at the fascinating variety of conceptions of language and related issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind, as discussed by figures such as Wilhelm Dilthey, Gottlob Frege, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Theodor W. Adorno, Ernst Cassirer, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Jaspers and Walter Benjamin.

This conference series aims to revive the dialogue between analytic and continental philosophy. To overcome this divide it is necessary to go back to the time when this divide took emerged, namely the period 1860-1951. This remains a widely neglected, but extremely fruitful period, especially with respect to German philosophy, marked by the deaths of two philosophers whose very different methods of inquiry and argumentation represent the end and the beginning of significant philosophical traditions: Schopenhauer (1860) and Wittgenstein (1951). The philosophers whose ideas and arguments the conference speakers will consider are all later German philosophers in this sense. The conference series aims to revisit German philosophers from this period, recover the wealth of original and challenging ideas and arguments they contributed to mind and language studies, and discuss their relevance to burning issues in contemporary philosophy.

10700,"Kulturphilosophie.

8422,"1813-2013: Two centuries of reading Friedrich Schleiermacher’s seminal text “About the different methods of translation”","
Two hundred years after his famous lecture at the Royal Academy of Science in Berlin, during the Napoleonic era, Friedrich Schleiermacher still remains an assiduous presence in Translation Studies bibliography all over the world. His definition of two (and only two) methods of translating has become indispensable to the common core vocabulary of both translators and researchers of translation alike. This binary opposition dates back to Saint Jerome, or even Cicero (De Oratore) and still retains all of its attractiveness, being referred to by different designations such as translation methods, strategies, procedures or norms. Among its best-known contemporary representatives are Gideon Toury’s initial norm of adequacy vs acceptability (Toury 1995) or Lawrence Venuti’s foreignizing vs. domesticating strategies (Venuti 1995), in either empirical or post-modern studies. Many other researchers, however, also structure their reflections on translation according to binomials that, when submitted to closer scrutiny, immediately reveal their close resemblance to Schleiermacher’s proposals. However, such proposals are far from being circumscribed to the definition of methods of translating, since they encompass a basic reflection on the relationship between thought and discourse, the translator, the typologies of translation, translation quality assessment, the reader/addressee, or even the need for a translation policy within the framework of a language policy, which is evidently relevant for the cultural dynamics he aspired to find in his country and language at that time. Despite some features that may be considered controversial nowadays (such as the idea that “one must be loyal to one language or another, just as to one nation, or else drift disoriented in an unlovely in-between realm”, which is so dear to the proponents of the hybridity and the “in-betweenness” of the translator), Schleiermacher still inspires important reflections on translation to this day. This conference seeks to offer a privileged forum for such contemporary reflection on translation.

Keynote Speakers Lawrence Venuti, José Justo

9829,"The History of the Relation Between Idealism and Pragmatism","
The objective here is to look in detail at how the classical American pragmatists saw themselves in relation to idealism. 7740,"Russell and Wittgenstein at the Crossroads 1911-1921","
The Bertrand Russell Research Centre is pleased to announce a conference to be held on 9-11 November 2013 at McMaster University. The topic of the conference is the philosophical interaction between Russell and Wittgenstein from 1911, when Wittgenstein first went to Cambridge to study with Russell, to 1921, which saw the English publication of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus and Russell’s Analysis of Mind. This was a formative period for Wittgenstein, who made his first contributions to philosophy under Russell’s influence, and a transformative one for Russell, who, in reaction to Wittgenstein’s criticisms, abandoned work on his Theory of Knowledge to adopt a program of logical construction in epistemology. Ten years later, Wittgenstein had published the definitive statement of his early philosophy, while Russell had turned towards the naturalism of mid-twentieth century analytic philosophy. Papers dealing with all aspects of this interaction are welcome. Submissions having to do with its logical and scientific aspects, as well as papers from graduate students, are encouraged.

8575,"","
Volume editors: Francesco Bianchini and Enrico Pasini

Leibniz and Husserl could be considered as the most significant stages of a course in which thought is the place of abstract, ideal and symbolic forms, that are not so distant and uprooted, yet, from an entirely tangible reality. Within such a general view we could see the strictly related passage – inside modern and contemporary philosophy – from the Leibnizian idea of mathesis universalis to the Husserlian radicalization of a pure logic as a theory of science, or, better, as a theory of every possible forms of theory.

Aim of the issue is to point out the connections, or the very continuities, among the aspects of Husserlian thought that seem to have been already present in Leibniz’s thought, promoting in this way an investigation that increases the comparison between these two different lines of theoretical and philosophical reflection.

Some of the topics which authors are invited to deal with are: the relation between Leibniz and Husserl as regards formal sciences; the use of symbolism or the rejection of psychologism, also in the light of acquisition due to the publications of Leibnizian unpublished works; the relation between logic and theory of knowledge, also from an epistemological point of view; the conception of “first philosophy” in the respective meanings; the relation between the themes of Husserlian formal ontology and the logical-ontological structure of Leibniz’s thought; the philosophical method by Leibniz and the related concepts of analysis and synthesis, beginning from their redefinition in Husserlian phenomenology; the rationalist and empiristic sources in Leibniz’s and Husserl’s thought; the relation between truth of reason and truth of fact; the Leibnizian monadology and the Husserlian treatment of intersubjectivity; the influence of Leibniz’s and Husserl’s ideas on contemporary philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence and cognitive science.

Submission can be made in English, French, German, and Italian and should not exceed 9,000 words including abstract, references and footnotes.
