DESCRIPTION:
Call for submissions: Cahiers sta&euml\;liens n&deg\;73\, Special issue: &ldquo\;Sta&euml\;l and Philosophy&rdquo\;
\n
Guest editors: Johanna Lenne-Cornuez and Charlotte Sabourin
\n
Germaine de Sta&euml\;l famously wrote in De l&rsquo\;Allemagne that &ldquo\;The world has been pleased\, for some time past to throw great discredit upon the very name of philosophy. The case is common with all those terms\, the signification of which is capable of much extension\; they are the objects of benediction or blame among mankind\, according to their use in fortunate or unhappy periods\; but\, in spite of the casual injustice or panegyric of individuals and of nations\, philosophy\, liberty\, religion\, never change their value. Man has spoken evil things of the sun\, of love\, and of life\; he has suffered\, he has felt himself consumed\, by these lights of nature\; but would he therefore extinguish them?&rdquo\; (Part III\, chap. 1 &ldquo\;Of Philosophy&rdquo\;\, tr. Wright).&nbsp\;
\n
This special issue of Cahiers sta&euml\;liens n&deg\;73 will explore the meanings\, dimensions\, and uses of the concept of philosophy in Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s work\, but also among the Coppet group\, as well as more broadly in the period 1780-1830.&nbsp\;
\n
A wide range of perspectives can be explored. In De la litt&eacute\;rature and in De l&rsquo\;Allemagne\, Sta&euml\;l puts forward an approach to philosophy which\, in the wake of Montesquieu\, studies it in its relationship with social institutions\, but also in its historical moment and geopolitical context. How is philosophy understood in relation to morals\, institutions\, and historical issues? This contextualization is\, however\, no relativization. What\, then\, is a philosophical truth according to Sta&euml\;l\, and in what sense do these truths &ldquo\;never change in value&rdquo\;? In line with the ideal of clarity and conciseness that Sta&euml\;l sets herself\, we can wonder how philosophical truths should be communicated\, and for whose benefit.
\n
One may also investigate the way in which Sta&euml\;l\, on the one hand\, reconstructs the history of philosophy and\, on the other hand\, makes use of the ideas of the philosophers she is influenced by. Particular attention may be given to Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s relationship with the philosophers who are most significant to her ideas. For instance\, Rousseau and Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s use of many Rousseauian concepts (Trouille 1997\, Lotterie 2013\, Genand 2016\, Lenne-Cornuez 2022) &ndash\; but also her unique appropriation of Kant&rsquo\;s ideas in De l&rsquo\;Allemagne (Monchoux 1966\, Macherey 1990\, Sabourin 2022) &ndash\; a work in which she also shares her reflections on Jacobi\, Fichte\, and several other German philosophers. More broadly\, the legacy of the philosophers of the Enlightenment in Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s philosophy can also be considered (see notably Binoche 2012\, Yuva 2010)\, as well as the way in which she herself understands the Enlightenment and the philosophical turning point that it constitutes.
\n
Beyond Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s relationship to other philosophers and to the history of philosophy\, conceptions of the latter can be investigated through its relationship to morality\, to religion (Binoche 2012)\, to politics\, and to history. One may be interested\, for instance\, in the specificity of philosophy with respect to other fields\, or in the way philosophy is grounded in an analysis of historical events or political circumstances. The context of the French Revolution\, for instance\, plays an important role in Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s work. What is a philosophy of the Revolution\, of political events\, or of history? Similarly\, the way in which Sta&euml\;l does philosophy and can be regarded as a philosopher &ndash\; or not &ndash\; can also be investigated.
\n
This can also pave the way for an investigation of the relationship between philosophy and femininity\, either in Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s own work or in the work of authors from the same period like Isabelle de Charri&egrave\;re or St&eacute\;phanie de Genlis. While Sta&euml\;l holds that women have a distinct feminine nature\, she also questions and dismantles the prejudice according to which women should dedicate themselves to literature while men would take charge of &ldquo\;high philosophy&rdquo\;. While Sta&euml\;l remains pessimistic about women&rsquo\;s chances of improving their condition\, she nevertheless wrote vibrant pleas emphasizing how little consideration is given to women in society (Fraisse 1998\, Lotterie 2003\, Nassar and Gjesdar 2021): &ldquo\;Since the Revolution\, men have decided that it is politically and morally useful to reduce women to the most absurd mediocrity. Men address women only in the most miserable language devoid of any delicacy or sense. For this reason\, women no longer have any inducement to develop their reason. This has not\, however\, resulted in an improvement of morality.&rdquo\; (De la litt&eacute\;rature vol. II\, part II\, chap. Nassar and Gjesdar) Like Mary Wollstonecraft and Amalia Holst in the same period\, Sta&euml\;l takes a particular interest in the education given to women and in the occupations they had access to &ndash\; in her novels\, through protagonists like Delphine or Corinne\, but also in her more standard philosophical works.
\n
From a similar perspective\, the relationships between philosophy and fiction (Paoletti 2013)\, or between philosophy and literature (Macherey 1990)\, can also be explored &ndash\; for instance by questioning these disciplinary divisions as well as the value judgements that they carry. For Sta&euml\;l\, literature must always be understood as a cultural product of the people from which it originates. Proper knowledge of world literatures is thus part of Sta&euml\;l&rsquo\;s cosmopolitan ideal. She was also\, as Macherey points out\, one of the first writers to use the term &ldquo\;literature&rdquo\; in its modern sense in De la litt&eacute\;rature.
\n
Proposals &ndash\; a tentative title\, an abstract (max. 300 words)\, as well as a mini-bio (max. 150 mots) in English or in French &ndash\; should be sent by December 15th\, 2022\, to Charlotte Sabourin and Johanna Lenne-Cornuez at the following address: stael.et.la.philosophie@gmail.com in a single document titled: name_first name_CS73_proposal.pdf
\n
Selected articles (max. 50\,000 characters) should be sent to the same address by May 15th\, 2023. They will be submitted to a double-blind review process by the journal&rsquo\;s editorial board.
\n
Final versions of the articles should be submitted by June 30th\, 2023. The special issue will then be published in Fall 2023 by Classiques Garnier and will be available on the Edinum website.
\n
-
\n
Appel &agrave\; contributions\, Cahiers Sta&euml\;liens n&deg\;73
\n
Dossier th&eacute\;matique : &laquo\; Sta&euml\;l et la philosophie &raquo\;
\n
Sous la direction de Johanna Lenne-Cornuez et Charlotte Sabourin
\n
Dans De l&rsquo\;Allemagne\, Germaine de Sta&euml\;l &eacute\;crit : &laquo\; On a voulu jeter\, depuis quelques temps\, une grande d&eacute\;faveur sur le mot philosophie. Il en est ainsi de tous ceux dont l&rsquo\;acception est tr&egrave\;s &eacute\;tendue \; ils sont l&rsquo\;objet des b&eacute\;n&eacute\;dictions ou des mal&eacute\;dictions de l&rsquo\;esp&egrave\;ce humaine\, suivant qu&rsquo\;on les emploie &agrave\; des &eacute\;poques heureuses ou malheureuses \; mais\, malgr&eacute\; les injures et les louanges accidentelles des individus et des nations\, la philosophie\, la libert&eacute\;\, la religion ne changent jamais de valeur. L&rsquo\;homme a maudit le soleil\, l&rsquo\;amour et la vie \; il a souffert\, il s&rsquo\;est consum&eacute\; par ces flambeaux de la nature \; mais voudrait-il pour cela les &eacute\;teindre ? &raquo\; (3&egrave\;me partie\, chap. 1 &laquo\; De la philosophie &raquo\;). Le dossier des Cahiers sta&euml\;liens n&deg\;73 se proposera d&rsquo\;explorer les acceptions\, les dimensions\, et les usages de la philosophie dans l&rsquo\;&oelig\;uvre de Sta&euml\;l\, mais aussi au sein du groupe de Coppet\, ainsi que plus largement dans le moment 1780-1830.&nbsp\;
\n
Plusieurs perspectives peuvent &ecirc\;tre envisag&eacute\;es.
\n
On pourra &eacute\;galement explorer la mani&egrave\;re dont Sta&euml\;l\, d&rsquo\;une part\, reconstruit l&rsquo\;histoire de la philosophie et dont\, d&rsquo\;autre part\, elle fait usage des id&eacute\;es des philosophes dont elle h&eacute\;rite. Une attention particuli&egrave\;re pourra &ecirc\;tre accord&eacute\;e au rapport de Sta&euml\;l avec les philosophes qui occupent une place singuli&egrave\;re dans sa pens&eacute\;e. On songe bien s&ucirc\;r ici &agrave\; l&rsquo\;importance de Rousseau et de l&rsquo\;usage que Sta&euml\;l fait de nombreux concepts rousseauistes (Trouille 1997\, Lotterie 2013\, Genand 2016\, Lenne-Cornuez 2022)\, mais aussi &agrave\; la fa&ccedil\;on bien particuli&egrave\;re dont elle s&rsquo\;approprie les id&eacute\;es de Kant dans De l&rsquo\;Allemagne (Monchoux 1966\, Macherey 1990\, Sabourin 2022) &ndash\; &oelig\;uvre o&ugrave\; l&rsquo\;on peut &eacute\;galement lire ses r&eacute\;flexions sur Jacobi\, Fichte\, et plusieurs autres philosophes allemands. Plus g&eacute\;n&eacute\;ralement\, c&rsquo\;est l&rsquo\;h&eacute\;ritage des philosophes des Lumi&egrave\;res dans la philosophie de Sta&euml\;l qui peut &ecirc\;tre envisag&eacute\; (voir notamment Binoche 2018\, Yuva 2010)\, ainsi que la mani&egrave\;re dont elle con&ccedil\;oit elle-m&ecirc\;me ce que sont les Lumi&egrave\;res et le tournant philosophique qu&rsquo\;elles constituent.&nbsp\;
\n
\n
Les propositions &ndash\; un titre provisoire\, un r&eacute\;sum&eacute\; de l&rsquo\;article (300 mots max.)\, ainsi qu&rsquo\;une mini-bio (150 mots max.) en anglais ou en fran&ccedil\;ais &ndash\; sont &agrave\; adresser avant le 15 d&eacute\;cembre 2022 &agrave\; Charlotte Sabourin et Johanna Lenne-Cornuez &agrave\; l&rsquo\;adresse suivante : stael.et.la.philosophie@gmail.com dans un document unique intitul&eacute\;&nbsp\;
\n
nom_pr&eacute\;nom_CS73_proposal.pdf
\n
Les articles retenus\, d&rsquo\;une longueur de 50.000 signes maximum\, devront &ecirc\;tre envoy&eacute\;s &agrave\; la m&ecirc\;me adresse avant le 15 mai 2023. Ils feront l&rsquo\;objet d&rsquo\;une double lecture &agrave\; l&rsquo\;aveugle par le comit&eacute\; de lecture de la revue.&nbsp\;
\n
Les articles\, sous leur forme d&eacute\;finitive\, seront &agrave\; rendre pour le 30 juin 2023. Le num&eacute\;ro de la revue para&icirc\;tra &agrave\; l&rsquo\;autonome 2023 chez Classiques Garnier et sera disponible sur le site Edinum.&nbsp\;
\n
