SUMMARY:The Limits of the Aesthetic
UID:20260621T184426Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-bd7db559-gt5qm
TZID:Europe/London
LOCATION:3 South Bailey\, Durham\, United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:
10.00 - 17.00

Participants: Emily Brady (Edinburgh)\, Aaron Meskin (Leeds)\, Elisabeth&nbsp\;Schellekens (Durham)\, Peter Lamarque (York)\, Greg Currie (Nottingham)\,&nbsp\;Andrew Huddleston (Oxford)\, Alan Bowden (Durham).

Recent years have seen sustained arguments being made for the pervasiveness&nbsp\;and significance of aesthetic experience in everyday life\, ranging from&nbsp\;experiences of itches and scratches\, domestic interiors and the weather\,&nbsp\;smells and tastes\, sports and dance\, and the commute to work\, amongst&nbsp\;others. These arguments and claims are intended to expand the domain of the&nbsp\;experiences and objects we might legitimately regard as aesthetically&nbsp\;significant.

Perhaps unsurprisingly\, such claims have met with opposition from theorists&nbsp\;concerned to reserve the concept of the aesthetic for more traditional&nbsp\;experiences involving valuing &lsquo\;for its own sake&rsquo\;\, self-conscious&nbsp\;appreciation and judgement\, certain cognitive prerequisites which only a&nbsp\;limited number of senses can provide\, and the possibility of critical&nbsp\;discourse. The aim of this workshop is\, therefore\, to clarify and explore&nbsp\;the issues surrounding contemporary attempts to extend the range of the&nbsp\;aesthetic. The questions we will consider include\, but are not limited to:
\n
\n
What underlying conceptions of the aesthetic\, aesthetic experience\,&nbsp\;aesthetic value\, and aesthetic properties are at play in current debates?
\n
How might contemporary research in areas such as perception\,&nbsp\;attention\, awareness\, and the senses impact on debates surrounding everyday&nbsp\;aesthetic experience?
\n
Are there limits on the kinds or combinations of senses that may be&nbsp\;involved in aesthetic experience?
\n
Do everyday aesthetic experiences fail to satisfy cognitive or&nbsp\;phenomenological prerequisites for aesthetic experience?
\n
Can there be aesthetic experiences or experiences of aesthetic&nbsp\;properties of which we are barely aware?
\n
\n
The workshop will consist of a number of formal and informal talks\, panel&nbsp\;discussions\, and open discussion.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided as part of the registration fee of&nbsp\;&pound\;5. If you would like to attend this please let me know as soon as possible.

We have a small number of Analysis Bursaries for postgraduates which will&nbsp\;cover up to 50% of accommodation and registration costs up to a value of&nbsp\;&pound\;17.50. Please indicate your interest when you register. (There is limited&nbsp\;bed and breakfast accommodation available at St. John&rsquo\;s College).

To register to attend\, please e-mail a.m.bowden[at]durham.ac.uk. Places are&nbsp\;limited\, so please e-mail to reserve a place. There will be a workshop fee&nbsp\;of &pound\;5.
