DESCRIPTION:
Description
\n
Slurring terms across languages (STAL-2023) is an international and interdisciplinary workshop whose primary aim is to gather work on slurs from languages that have been seldom discussed in the recent philosophical and semantic literature\, and in particular\, from sign languages and non-Indo-European languages. It aims to bring to light new empirical data and uncover novel interesting phenomena that may have the potential to challenge current theories of slurs. The workshop focuses on theoretical and empirical studies of slurs from such languages\, comparisons with English slurs\, wider cross-linguistic approaches\, as well as developments of extant theories in application to the new data or previously neglected phenomena.
\n
Topics:&nbsp\;slurs\, pejoratives\, crosslinguistic data\, derogatory speech
\n
Program
\n
WEDNESDAY\, JUNE 7
\n
10:45-11:00 Welcome
\n
11:00-11:50 Alex Davies\, Fred Gregor Rahuoja\, Kadi Raal and Anett P&auml\;rismaa (University of Tartu)\, &ldquo\;An Anti-Immigrant Slur in Soviet Occupied Estonia&rdquo\;
\n
11:50-12:10 Break
\n
12:10-13:00 Nursulu Sagimbayeva (Saarland University)\, &ldquo\;Understanding the Kazakh 'Mambet': Meaning\, Usage\, and Prospects for Reclamation&rdquo\;
\n
13:00-15:00 Lunch break
\n
15:00-15:40 Filippo Domaneschi (University of Genoa) &amp\; Camilo Rodriguez Ronderos (University of Oslo)\, &ldquo\;Anticipating the F***ing Referent: An Eye-tracking Study on the Role of Italian Expressive Adjectives During Sentence Comprehension&rdquo\;
\n
15:40-16:20 Esben Nedenskov Petersen (University of Southern Denmark)\, &ldquo\;Multimorphemic Danish Slurs with Negative Expressives: A Conventional Implicature Account&rdquo\;
\n
16:20-16:40 Break
\n
16:40-17:20 Chang Liu (Shanghai Jiao Tong University)\, &ldquo\;Slurs and Lexical Silencing in Chinese&rdquo\;
\n
17:20-18:00 Jonathan Ginzburg (Paris Cit&eacute\; University) and Mihaela Popa-Wyatt (University of Manchester)\, "Slurs and Mocking Laughter: A Unified Account via Interactional History"
\n
18:00-18:20 Break
\n
18:20-19:00 Bianca Cepollaro (University Vita-Salute San Raffaele)\, Simone Sulpizio (University of Milano-Bicocca)\, Claudia Bianchi (University Vita-Salute San Raffaele) and Isidora Stojanovic (Institut Jean Nicod)\, &ldquo\;Slurs in Quarantine&rdquo\;
\n
THURSDAY\, JUNE 8
\n
11:00-11:50 Robin Jeshion (University of South California)\, &ldquo\;Owning It: An Expressionist Analysis of Reclamation&rdquo\;
\n
11:50-12:10 Break
\n
12:10-13:00 Miguel Rodr&iacute\;guez-Mondo&ntilde\;edo and Alexandra Arnaiz (Pontifical Catholic University of Peru)\, &ldquo\;Insults\, Slurs\, and Expletives in Peruvian Sign Language&rdquo\;
\n
13:00-15:00 Lunch break
\n
15:00-15:50 Gerhard Schaden and Luca Gasparri (University of Lille)\, &ldquo\;Slurring without Nouns&rdquo\;
\n
15:50-16:10 Break
\n
16:10-17:00 Una Stojnic (Princeton University) and Ernie Lepore (Rutgers University)\, &ldquo\;Slurring Articulations&rdquo\;
\n
Scientific Committee
\n
Heather Burnett (CNRS/University of Paris)
\n
Bianca Cepollaro (University Vita-Salute San Raffaele)
\n
Filippo Domaneschi (University of Genoa)
\n
Elsi Kaiser (University of Southern California)
\n
Natalia Karczewska (University of Warsaw)
\n
Jeremy Kuhn (Institut Jean Nicod)
\n
Chang Liu (Shanghai Jiao Tong University)
\n
Elin McCready (Aoyama Gakuin University)
\n
Eleonora Orlando (University of Buenos Aires)
\n
Camilo Rodriguez Ronderos (Universoity of Oslo)
\n
Andr&eacute\;s Saab (SADAF/University of Buenos Aires)
\n
Isidora Stojanovic (Institut Jean Nicod)
\n
Dan Zeman (University of Warsaw)
\n
Practical information
\n
The conference will be held at the Ecole Normale Sup&eacute\;rieure\, 29 rue d'Ulm\, Paris\, France (salle Th&eacute\;odule Ribot)\, with the entrance on 24 rue Lhomond.
