DESCRIPTION:<p>The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Marist College will host the Eleventh Mid-Hudson Valley Undergraduate Philosophy Conference 14-15 April 2023. Undergraduates are encouraged to submit papers on any topic in philosophy. The conference is selective\, accepting at most six papers. There are no concurrent presentations. Each paper presentation includes comments from another undergraduate from either Marist College's philosophy program or from one of the other philosophy programs at four other colleges in the Mid-Hudson Valley Region of Upstate New York. All of the undergraduate presentations will take place in the Henry Hudson Room on the third floor of Fontaine Hall at Marist College.<br><br>The keynote speaker this year will be Dr. C. Thi Nguyen\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah. Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on problems in epistemology\, aesthetics\, and value theory\, with an emphasis on both how human rationality and agency are socially embedded and the nature of the relevant social structures. Dr. Nguyen's book\, <em>Games: Agency as Art </em>(Oxford University Press\, 2020) was awarded the American Philosophical Association's 2021 Book Prize. He was also awarded the 2020 American Philosophical Association's Article Prize for his article published in <em>The Philosophical Review</em>\, "Games and the Art of Agency<em>."&nbsp\; </em>The same article was also selected for inclusion in the <em>Philosopher Annual's</em> "Ten Best Philosophy Articles of 2019). His article "Moral Outrage Porn" (co-authored with Bekka Williams) that appeared in the <em>Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy </em>was selected for inclusion in the <em>Philosopher Annual's </em>"Ten Best Philosophy Articles of 2020." Dr. Nguyen will be awarded the Apostolos Stefanopoulos Prize in Philosophy for Contributions in Applied Philosophy and Ethics (an APA-recognized prize) on the occassion of his lecture. Dr. Nguyen's presentation will take place at 17:00 on Friday\, 14 April 2023 in the Nelly Goletti Theatre at Marist College.</p>
