Abstract
A &ldquo\;philosopher of name\, number\, and myth\,&rdquo\; in his own words\, Aleksei Fedorovich Losev (1893&ndash\;1988) is an outstanding Russian thinker\, philologist\, classicist\, translator\, commentator\, and writer. The scope of his interests includes philosophy\, philology\, aesthetics\, religion\, myth\, mathematics\, and music. A Renaissance figure in modern Russian culture\, Losev inherited\, developed\, and enriched the classical traditions of Russian thought and preserved them for future generations. This talk focuses on Losev&rsquo\;s philosophy of language\, in particular\, on his understanding of the concepts of name\, symbol\, and myth.

Speaker Bio
Dr. Olga Lyanda-Geller is an Assistant Professor of Russian (School of Languages and Cultures)\, Jewish Studies and Comparative Literature (School of Interdisciplinary Studies)\, and Philosophy (Courtesy Appointment) at Purdue University. She holds graduate degrees in philosophy and philology (PhD\, Purdue\; Candidate of Science\, Russia\; DEA\, Sorbonne\, France). Dr. \;Lyanda-Geller&rsquo\;s research is interdisciplinary. Her principal interest is the nature of language\, which she has been exploring from both linguistic and philosophical points of view\, investigating concepts ranging from the &lsquo\;lekton&rsquo\; in the Stoic doctrine\, to &lsquo\;inner form&rsquo\; and symbol in the German tradition (Humboldt\, Herder\, Hegel) and Russian thought (Losev\, Shpet\, Bulgakov.) Her work focuses on various aspects of the category of meaning\, different ways of expression of sense by linguistic means\, and forming new concepts in language. Her current projects include research in the area of cross-disciplinary language and engineering education\, classical and modern Russian and comparative literature\, Jewish studies\, and philosophy of music.
