Abstract:
According to the mechanistic account of neuroscientific explanation\, explanations of cognitive phenomena are multi-level: higher-level properties of a system are accounted for in terms of the interactions of the system's component parts. However\, this leaves a puzzle about the nature of the relationship between levels. The philosophy of mind deals with this question from a metaphysical point of view\, describing inter-level relations in terms of supervenience\, realization\, emergence\, constitution or different notions of reduction. However\, a systematic investigation of the connection between this metaphysical perspective and the mechanistic approach prevalent in the philosophy of neuroscience is still missing. This workshop aims to integrate specific analyses of single cases of successful neuroscientific explanation with general metaphysical considerations about the relationship between phenomena at different levels.
