DESCRIPTION:
Reminder Online Zoom Conference:&nbsp\;Is\, Ought and Other Barriers to Entailment
\n
Philosophy Programme\, University of Otago\, Dunedin\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;New Zealand\,&nbsp\;
\n\n
Dates&nbsp\;Monday January 29th- Thursday&nbsp\;&nbsp\;1st&nbsp\;February
\n\n
There will&nbsp\;&nbsp\;be two three-paper sessions daily\, an evening (New Zealand)/morning (Europe) session and a morning (New Zealand)/evening (Europe) session\, each lasting three hours twenty minutes\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Papers to run for&nbsp\;forty minutes (maximum) for the presentation\, twenty minutes (minimum) for the Q&amp\;A.&nbsp\;
\n\n
Themes
\n
Hume famously claimed that you can&rsquo\;t get an&nbsp\;Ought&nbsp\;from an&nbsp\;Is\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;a moral conclusion from no-form non-moral premises.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Thus he seems to be proposing a&nbsp\;barrier to entailment\;&nbsp\;a claim that you can&rsquo\;t get conclusions of&nbsp\;one&nbsp\;kind from premises of&nbsp\;another.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;This conference will be devoted to a critical examination of such claims.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Can you derive conclusions about the future from premises about the past\, conclusions about the external world from premises about present impressions\, general conclusions from particular premises or (more generally) substantively X-conclusions from non-X premises? And what are the philosophical consequences of such barriers to entailment&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n\n
Registration&nbsp\;is free but prospective attendees are requested to email Dr Karen Maclean .
\n
Programme Administrator\, Philosophy\, University of&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Otago\,&nbsp\;at&nbsp\;<a#954f72\;" href="mailto:philosophy@otago.ac.nz">philosophy@otago.ac.nz&nbsp\;for a Timetable (particularly important&nbsp\;&nbsp\;for a multi-continental Zoom conference)\, a set of Abstracts and log-in details.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Subject Line:&nbsp\;Barriers Conference Registration&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n\n
&nbsp\;Invited Speakers&nbsp\;(listed alphabetically)
\n
Dr. Norbert Gratzl\, and Dr Edi Pavlovic Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit&auml\;t\, M&uuml\;nchen.
\n
Is\, Ought\, and Some Proof Theory
\n
Professor Dr Catarina Duthil Novaes\,&nbsp\;Vrije Universiteit\, Amsterdam&nbsp\;
\n
Dialogical pragmatism and the justification of deduction&nbsp\;
\n
Professor&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Mark Nelson\,&nbsp\;Westmont College\, Santa Barbara.
\n
Aunt Dahlia meets the Barriers to Entailment
\n
&nbsp\;Professor Charles Pigden\, University of Otago\, Dunedin.
\n
Prior&rsquo\;s Paradox Redux\,&nbsp\;No-Ought-From-Is and the Deficiencies of Deontic Logic\,&nbsp\;Can Truth Subvert the Inference-Barriers?
\n
Professor Adriane Rini\, Massey University\, Palmerston North.
\n
Arthur Prior: From the Autonomy of Ethics to &lsquo\;The Autonomy of Ethics&rsquo\;
\n
Professor Gillian Russell\,&nbsp\;Australian National University\, Canberra.
\n
Barriers to Entailment&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Professor Dr Gerhard Schurz\, Heinrich-Heine-Universit&auml\;t\, D&uuml\;sseldorf
\n
The Is-Ought dichotomy and its consequences for the value-neutrality of science
\n
&nbsp\;Professor Gila Sher\, University of California\, San Diego
\n
Values\, Truth\, and Logic: the Route from "Is" to "Ought" and "Must".
\n
Associate Professor Sara Uckelman\, University of Durham\, Durham.
\n
About the Past and About the Future: Diodorus&rsquo\;s Master Argument
\n\n
Speakers
\n
Professors Antonella Corradini and Sergio Galvan\,&nbsp\;Universit&agrave\; Cattolica del Sacro Cuore\, Milano\, Italia
\n
Hume's Law\, Normative Supervenience and Bridge-Principles&nbsp\;
\n
Professor James Franklin\, Sydney University\, Sydney\, NSW\, Australia
\n
The Worth of Persons as a Stepping-Stone from Is to Ought&nbsp\;
\n
Dr Jeremiah Joven Joaquin\, Department of Philosophy\, De La Salle University\, Manila\, Philippines
\n
Tertullian&rsquo\;s Entailment Barrier Thesis
\n
Dr Andr&eacute\;s Luco\, Auburn University\, Alabama\, USA
\n
Naturalistic Fallacies and Normativity Naturalized
\n
Professor Kevin Meeker\, University of South Alabama\, Mobile Alabama\, USA&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Breaking Down Barriers: Humean Hints on Philosophy of Logic
\n
Note to colleagues in the Americas&nbsp\;
\n
Please note that&nbsp\;the&nbsp\;Morning NZ &amp\; Australia/Evening Europe sessions are likely to be the most convenient for you\, but that for you they will be on the preceding days.
