DESCRIPTION:<p>Link:&nbsp\;<a href="https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/launcher.html?url=%2F_%23%2Fl%2Fmeetup-join%2F19%3Ameeting_MWQxOTYxY2EtZGVjNC00ZDM3LTg1ZWUtMmI3ZjdmMjcxMTI2%40thread.v2%2F0%3Fcontext%3D%257b%2522Tid%2522%253a%2522429af009-f196-448f-ae79-58c212a0f2ce%2522%252c%2522Oid%2522%253a%25224d9dfbf2-899f-4f48-a309-2c189a589bc6%2522%257d%26anon%3Dtrue&amp\;type=meetup-join&amp\;deeplinkId=8ca27bbe-25fb-430a-b849-3bb1b8cc92d2&amp\;directDl=true&amp\;msLaunch=true&amp\;enableMobilePage=true&amp\;suppressPrompt=true">Join conversation (microsoft.com)</a></p>\n<p>Abstract:&nbsp\;This paper wants to take seriously the prominence of expressly Stoic or &ldquo\;Stoicising&rdquo\; ideas in Haybron&rsquo\;s phenomenology of happiness\,as an emotional state of attuned\, engaged\, life-endorsement which mirrors Stoic claims about the <em>eupatheiai </em>(good passions) of the sage (1).&nbsp\; We'll contend that Haybron misconstrues the relationship between happiness and well-being\, and the place of the virtues in the flourishing life.&nbsp\; Our contention\, developed with recourse to core Stoic ideas\, is that (a) contra Haybron\, cultivating well-being through the virtues\, led by Socratic-Stoic <em>phron&ecirc\;sis</em>\, is a necessary precondition for genuine Haybron-happiness\, which underlies those &ldquo\;sources&rdquo\; Haybron nominates in <em>Happiness</em>\; and (b) that\, contra Haybron&rsquo\;s criticism of the putative &ldquo\;externalism&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;perfectionism&rdquo\; of ancient eudaimonisms\, the virtues have prudential value\, such that Haybron&rsquo\;s strong separation of the good life from the life of flourishing cannot stand as he frames it.</p>\n\n
