DESCRIPTION:
Call for Abstracts
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Universit&auml\;t zu K&ouml\;ln\, 22. und 23. November 2024
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Wissenschaftlicher Leiter:
\n
&bull\;&nbsp\;Prof. Dr. Christoph Helmig\,&nbsp\;Universit&auml\;t zu K&ouml\;ln
\n\n
Organisationsausschuss:
\n
&bull\;&nbsp\;Dr. des. Ina Schall\,&nbsp\;KU Leuven
\n
&bull\;&nbsp\;Dr. Enrico Volpe\,&nbsp\;Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici/ Universit&auml\;t von Salerno
\n\n
\n
Das Problem der Exegese der platonischen Schriften spielt insbesondere im Sp&auml\;tneuplatonismus eine wichtige Rolle\, wo die systematische Arbeit an der platonischen Terminologie zentral f&uuml\;r die &Uuml\;berlegungen der Neuplatoniker ist. Tats&auml\;chlich galt der&nbsp\;Timaios&nbsp\;nach dem&nbsp\;Parmenides&nbsp\;als der bedeutendste Dialog im Curriculum der Schule von Athen im 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Auch religi&ouml\;se Einfl&uuml\;sse m&uuml\;ssen hier ber&uuml\;cksichtigt werden\, wobei den&nbsp\;Chald&auml\;ischen Orakeln&nbsp\;und der&nbsp\;Theogonie&nbsp\;des Hesiod eine zentrale Rolle zukommen. Es stellt sich die Frage\, in welchem Verh&auml\;ltnis religi&ouml\;se Vorstellungen zu den metaphysischen Aspekten der Kosmologie stehen.&nbsp\;
\n
\n\n
Organisiert von:
\n
Dr. des. Ina Schall\,&nbsp\;KU Leuven
\n
&bull\;&nbsp\;Dr. Enrico Volpe\,&nbsp\;Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici/&nbsp\;University&nbsp\;of Salerno
\n\n
The reception of Plato's&nbsp\;Timaeus&nbsp\;plays a central role in Neoplatonism. Neoplatonists drew on many elements from this work to develop and refine their metaphysical systems. Plato's&nbsp\;Timaeus&nbsp\;is not the only source of inspiration\; equally important are the works of Aristotle\, other ancient cosmologies such as those of Eudoxus\, and Stoic models. In addition\, religious influences &ndash\; including Orphic and Pythagorean traditions\, Jewish and Christian theology\, as well as Gnostic and Hermetic ideas &ndash\; significantly shaped the interpretation of cosmogony\, particularly in late Neoplatonism.
\n
Against this background\, research into the Neoplatonic views on the world\, its structure\, and its origin is essential in the context of current studies on Neoplatonism. Although numerous studies on ancient cosmology already exist\, many questions remain open. Particularly central is the concept of &alpha\;ἴ&tau\;&iota\;&omicron\;&nu\; (cause) and the structure of the soul(s) and the World Soul. In Plotinus\, for instance\, it remains unclear how the World Soul differs from the soul-hypostasis and what role nature plays in this context\; could it possibly be regarded as a "fourth hypostasis"? It is also important to understand how the soul affects matter. How exactly can the soul influence the material world?
\n
The exegesis of Platonic writings plays a particularly important role in late Neoplatonism\, where systematic work on Platonic terminology is central to the reflections of the Neoplatonists. In fact\, after the&nbsp\;Parmenides\, the&nbsp\;Timaeus&nbsp\;was considered the most important dialogue in the curriculum of the School of Athens in the 5th century A.D. Religious influences must also be taken into account\, with the&nbsp\;Chaldean Oracles&nbsp\;and the&nbsp\;Theogony&nbsp\;of Hesiod playing a central role. This raises the question of the relationship between religious ideas and the metaphysical aspects of cosmology.
\n
The interpretation of the&nbsp\;Timaeus&nbsp\;revolves not least around the problem of the origin of the cosmos\; in particular the passage&nbsp\;Tim.&nbsp\;28b7\, in which the cosmos is described as having &ldquo\;come into being&rdquo\; (&gamma\;έ&gamma\;&omicron\;&nu\;&epsilon\;&nu\;). Is this &ldquo\;coming into being&rdquo\; to be interpreted literally or metaphorically? Did the world actually come into being? Debates on this question pervade the entirety of Neoplatonism\, from Plotinus to Proclus. In relation to the question of the origin of the cosmos\, the problem of identifying the Demiurge (supreme god\, "creator god"\, initiator of cosmogenesis) also arises. The Demiurge is an important figure in the&nbsp\;Timaeus\, as he is responsible for the creation of the World Soul and the world body. In Plato\, it remains unclear whether the Demiurge is a metaphysical entity or merely a metaphor for the realm of Forms. This problem also intensely occupied the Neoplatonists and led to various solutions.
\n\n
Our conference aims to shed light and discuss cosmogony in Neoplatonism from different perspectives and to bring together and focus on promising trends in recent research. We have already secured Dr. Angela Ulacco (KU Leuven)\, an expert in the history of Platonism and Pythagoreanism\, for the keynote lecture.
\n\n
Organised by:
\n
Dr. des.
