DESCRIPTION:<p>CALL FOR PAPERS</p>\n<p>&ldquo\;Approaching Ancient Philosophy: the Hows and Whys of Doing Ancient Philosophy&rdquo\;</p>\n<p>University of Cambridge\, Faculty of Classics</p>\n<p>March 21-22\, 2014</p>\n<p>Submission deadline: 10th January 2014</p>\n<p><a href="https://sites.google.com/site/approachingaphil2014/">https://sites.google.com/site/approachingaphil2014/</a></p>\n<p>Just as the ancient philosophers argued about why and how one should practice philosophy\, we too\, in studying them\, need to reflect on our aims and methods. The 2014 Cambridge Graduate Conference in Ancient Philosophy will explore questions concerning the value and ways of doing ancient philosophy today. We welcome abstracts from graduate students and early career researchers for papers of approximately 3000-3500 words falling within the following three categories:</p>\n<p>a) The methods and aims of the ancient philosophers themselves\;</p>\n<p>b) The reception of ancient philosophy\; how and why have the ancients been studied\, from ancient commentators to contemporary trends\;</p>\n<p>c) Today&rsquo\;s situation\; what are the methods and aims\, relevance and value of today&rsquo\;s research into ancient philosophy.</p>\n<p>Possible areas of focus include\, but are not limited to:</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- The use of dialogue\, dialectic\, and protreptic in ancient philosophy</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- Philosophy and the good life</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- When\, if ever\, ancient philosophy ends and reception begins</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- The revival of virtue ethics</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- The methodological approach(es) we should adopt when studying ancient philosophy</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- The contemporary relevance or usefulness of ancient philosophy</p>\n<p>&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\;- Gender and the study of ancient philosophy</p>\n<p>Please submit abstracts as email attachments to <a href="mailto:approachingaphil2014@gmail.com"><em>approachingaphil2014@gmail.com</em></a>. Abstracts should be submitted as .pdf files and should not exceed 500 words. Please put &lsquo\;Conference Abstract Submission&rsquo\; as the subject of your email and include your <em>name</em>\, <em>departmental affiliation</em>\, <em>email address</em>\, and the <em>title</em> of your paper in the body of the email. Abstracts should be prepared for blind review\; please ensure that your abstract is free from any identifying personal details.</p>\n<p>Submission deadline: 10th January 2014.</p>\n<p>Notification of results will be given by the 24th January 2014.</p>\n<p>Queries should be sent to Ellisif Wasmuth (ew419@cam.ac.uk).
