The University of Hong Kong's AI&\;Humanity Lab\, in conjunction with its Masters of Arts in AI\, Ethics\, and Society\, is seeking papers for an upcoming workshop on the theme of AI consciousness and welfare. The workshop will be held in person in HKU on the 5th and 6th of March. The workshop is organized by Professor Herman Cappelen and Dr Simon Goldstein. Travel and accommodation will be covered for all accepted papers. The theme of the workshop is AI consciousness and welfare broadly construed. Some questions we are interested in include (but are not limited to): \; \;
\n(*) Are current or future generation systems conscious or likely to be conscious? \;
\n(*) How can we tell whether AI systems are conscious? \;
\n(*) What theory of welfare best makes sense of AI systems? \;
\n(*) What is the link (if any) between consciousness and welfare in the context of AI? \; \;
\nWe encourage interdisciplinary approaches and authors outside of philosophy\, provided there is a clear philosophical theme. Submissions should consist of extended abstracts of 1000 words\, suitable for anonymous review. Talks will last around 45 minutes. The deadline for submission is 31 December 2024 at midnight in whatever timezone you're in. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of January 2025.
