DESCRIPTION:
WORKSHOP: Knowledge of Transcendent Objects
\n\n
DATE: 8-9 May 2014 (Thursday-Friday)
\n\n
PLACE: New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study\, Bucharest\, Romania
\n\n
CONFIRMED SPEAKERS:
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Andrew Chignell (Cornell)
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Desmond Hogan (Princeton)
\n\n
DESCRIPTION: In the Critique of Pure Reason Kant argues in various ways that the project of traditional metaphysics to ground the possibility of knowledge of transcendent objects is an impossibility (an &lsquo\;illusion&rsquo\;). The term &lsquo\;transcendent objects&rsquo\; is understood by Kant to refer to the indeterminate domain of the object in general\, to objects (or &lsquo\;things&rsquo\;) in themselves and to the three objects which traditional metaphysicians mainly directed their attention to\, namely God\, the soul and the world as a whole. The purpose of the workshop is to examine ways in which one may overturn Kant&rsquo\;s conclusion and thereby reestablish the possibility of knowledge of transcendent objects. We welcome papers that are written from either an analytic or a continental or a historical point of view. Papers that seek to defend Kant&rsquo\;s conclusions are also very welcome.
\n\n
CALL FOR PAPERS: Please send an abstract of 500 words to itrisokkas@nec.ro by January 15\, 2014. Abstracts will be selected by an academic committee appointed by New Europe College. Those whose abstract will be selected are expected to send the organizers the full version of the paper\, suitable for a 45-minute presentation\, by May 1\, 2014. We will seek to publish the papers with a well-known publisher. Travel expenses up to 300 Euros\, lunch/dinner and two-night accommodation will be covered.
\n\n
ORGANIZER: Dr. Ioannis Trisokkas (EntE NEC Fellow) [itrisokkas@nec.ro]
\n\n
This workshop is organized in the framework of the Europe next to Europe Program at the New Europe College\, supported by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Sweden).
