DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Call for Abstracts</strong></p>\n<p><strong>EXTENDED DEADLINE</strong></p>\n<p><strong>International Conference on National Identity in a Time of Crisis</strong></p>\n<p><strong>June 29 and 30\, 2025</strong></p>\n<p><strong>American University of Armenia</strong></p>\n<p>The Horizon Europe project&nbsp\;ETICA&nbsp\;&nbsp\;(Center for Ethics in Public Affairs) at the American University of Armenia\, directed by the ERA Chair&nbsp\;Professor Maria Baghramian\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;will inaugurate its international activities through a major multi-disciplinary conference on the theme of National Identity in a Time of Crisis. The conference\, taking place on June 29 and 30\, 2025 at AUA\, is co-hosted by the&nbsp\;<u>NYU Global Institute for Advanced Study</u>&nbsp\;the&nbsp\;Armenian Society of Fellows&nbsp\;and the&nbsp\;&nbsp\;AUA&nbsp\;Turpanjian&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Institute of Social Sciences\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;where the Center for Ethics&nbsp\;in Public Affairs&nbsp\;will be based.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The conference explores foundational questions relevant to the place\, the significance and the nature of national identity in a world facing a multitude of old and new challenges and uncertainties.&nbsp\;The keynote speakers are:&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Levon Abrahamian&nbsp\;&nbsp\;(The National Academy of Sciences\, Armenia)</p>\n<p>Anthony Appiah&nbsp\;&nbsp\;(NYU\, USA)</p>\n<p>Gina Gustavsson&nbsp\;(Uppsala\, Sweden)</p>\n<p>David&nbsp\;Miller&nbsp\;(Oxford\, UK)</p>\n<p>Aghasi Tadevosyan&nbsp\;(National Academy of Sciences\, Armenia)</p>\n<p>Anne-Marie Thiesse&nbsp\;(CNRS\, France)</p>\n<p>Abstracts of 500 words\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;for conference presentations of 30-40 minutes\, in English or Armenian\, are invited on topics relevant to the general theme of the conference\, including but not limited to:&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Narratives of national identity: A construction or an immovable cultural heritage?&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The markers of national identity: Language\; Shared history\; Religion\; Art\; Architecture\; Other cultural symbols.</p>\n<p>Shared and contested national identities&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The politics of national identity: The uses and abuses of&nbsp\;&nbsp\;national identities in political contexts</p>\n<p>The ethics of national identity: Rights\,&nbsp\;responsibilities and moral obligations</p>\n<p>National identities across geographical boundaries</p>\n<p>Identities beyond national boundaries and the impact of migration</p>\n<p>Multiculturalism and national identity&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Abstracts on themes from the work of the keynote speakers are also very welcome.</p>\n<p>The official languages of the conference are English and Armenian. Abstracts in either language are welcome.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;The keynote sessions will be translated but the submitted papers\, organised in parallel sessions\,will not be. We aim to publish a selection of the conference proceedings.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Anonymised abstracts&nbsp\;&nbsp\;in&nbsp\;Word&nbsp\;should be sent as email attachments to&nbsp\;etica@aua.am\, with the heading National Identity Abstracts. Competitive travel grants of up to 800 euro and complimentary&nbsp\;&nbsp\;lunch and dinner on June 29 and 30 will be awarded to a maximum of eight early career international researchers who do not have access to other research funding.&nbsp\;This is an in-person conference.
