DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Journal: Philosophical Education (University of Warsaw)</strong></p>\n<p>Guest Editors: Andrea Vestrucci (University of Bamberg\, Germany\; ILT College\, US)\, Sara Lumbreras (University of Comillas\, Spain)\, and Ralph Weir (University of Lincoln\, UK)</p>\n<p><strong>DEADLINE: March 30\, 2025</strong></p>\n<p>The ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) is currently one of the most relevant topics of interdisciplinary research. Approaches include:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>Practical and Applied Ethics of AI. Research into the concrete ethical challenges posed by AI systems covering key areas such as:</li>\n</ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Trustworthy AI (TAI) (including interpretability\, reliability\, robustness\, privacy\, safety).</li>\n<li>Bias and discrimination in AI decision-making systems.</li>\n<li>Sensitive applications of AI (educational\, medical\, juridical etc.) and impact on labour markets.</li>\n<li>Fairness\, accountability\, transparency\, and explainability (FATE)\, and its distinction from or embedding in the TAI agenda.</li>\n</ul>\n<ol>\n<li>AI Safety and Long-Term Challenges. Research into speculative\, future-oriented\, and existential issues tied to AI\, addressing key topics like:</li>\n</ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Aligning AI systems with human values\, e.g. well-being\, sustainability\, trust.</li>\n<li>Preventing catastrophic misuse or uncontrolled AI development\, e.g. in automated weapons.</li>\n<li>Exploring AI&rsquo\;s potential for applications in human enhancement.</li>\n<li>Predicting future developments in AI and related technologies.</li>\n</ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Metaethics and the Moral Status of AI. Work on theoretical questions about AIs as moral or legal persons\, and the implications of AI for meta-ethics such as:</li>\n</ol>\n<ul>\n<li>In what sense AIs can have moral agency and can be considered the bearer of ethical rights and duties.</li>\n<li>The impact of AI on the foundations of ethics.</li>\n<li>The substitution of AIs for humans in personal relationships.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>This special issue of the journal&nbsp\;<em>Philosophical Education</em>&nbsp\;(University of Warsaw) will host contributions that&nbsp\;<strong>advance&nbsp\;</strong>or&nbsp\;<strong>challenge</strong>&nbsp\;current approaches on the ethics of AI\, for example by critically reflecting on key terms and concepts\; scrutinising widely held positions\; or defending practical strategies for the implementation of ethical AI systems.</p>\n<p><strong>Deadlines and Guidelines</strong></p>\n<p>Interested contributors are invited to send their article to&nbsp\;edukacjafilozoficzna@uw.edu.pl&nbsp\;by the&nbsp\;<strong>31 March 2025</strong>&nbsp\;for full consideration. They are also welcome to send (at the same address) an abstract of the intended paper&nbsp\;<strong>earlier</strong>\, to check whether their topic is appropriate for the special issue.</p>\n<p>Submissions should be between 20\,000 and 40\,000 characters (c. 4\,000 and 9000 words) and should include an abstract between 800 and 1200 characters (c. 150 and 200 words)\, 5-8 keywords and a bibliography. Once accepted\, papers will need to adhere to the journal&rsquo\;s formatting guidelines:&nbsp\;http://www.edukacja-filozoficzna.uw.edu.pl/en/do-autorow/</p>\n<p><strong>Publishing Policy</strong></p>\n<p>Submissions are subjected to double-blind peer review.</p>\n<p><em>Philosophical Education</em>&nbsp\;does not charge the authors any fees for publishing.</p>\n<p>Authors do not transfer the copyright of their papers to the Publisher\, but only grant the Publisher a non-exclusive licence (CC-BY 4.0).</p>\n<p>We provide professional copy-editing and typesetting for all Authors.</p>\n<p>All contributions are published both in print (<strong>one free copy for every author</strong>) and online (open access). To maximise impact\, online publication will occur as soon as possible after copy-editing. We also encourage authors to upload PDF copies of their articles to other websites and repositories to make them more accessible to the public.</p>
