DESCRIPTION:<p>Dear all\, I am pleased to invite you to submit abstracts for the panel "Nosos and Mania in Greek and Roman Philosophy"\, which Stefano Mecci and I are organizing for the upcoming (16th) Celtic Conference in Classics (Coimbra. July 15-18\, 2025). This panel explores the intertwined concepts of "nosos" (disease) and "mania" (madness) within Greek and Roman philosophy. While these notions have been widely discussed in ancient literature\, their philosophical dimensions remain underexplored. We aim to address both the physical and metaphorical aspects of these terms\, examining topics such as: &nbsp\;- The influence of medicine on ancient philosophy\, with a focus on authors like Parmenides and the Platonic tradition. <br>- The metaphor of philosophy as "healer"\, "medicine"\, and the philosopher as "doctor" or "physician". <br>- The interplay between divine inspiration\, madness\, and rationality\, as seen in ancient thought and tragedy (e.g.\, Stoic interpretations of Medea or Orestes). &nbsp\; We welcome contributions that analyze these themes from philosophical\, ethical\, political\, and metaphysical perspectives\, as well as interdisciplinary approaches involving literary or religious studies. Abstracts (300&ndash\;500 words\, in English or Spanish) should be submitted by February 20\, 2025 to&nbsp\;slombardi@uc.cl&nbsp\;or&nbsp\;stefano.mecci@uniroma1.it\, following the template on the CCC website. Papers will be 30 minutes long with a 15-minute discussion. Notifications will be sent by the end of February 2025. PhD and early-career researchers are particularly welcome. Please note that this is an in-person event\, and travel/accommodation expenses are not reimbursed. Best regards\,&nbsp\; Sofia Lombardi</p>
