Already in the 1860ies\, he had a conception of phenomenology as a systematic investigation of the basic elements of our mental life: sensory qualities\, time- and space determinations\, and consciousness (including presenting\, judging and affective states). Edmund Husserl developed this investigation further into a philosophical discipline of its own. At bottom\, however\, the Brentanian and Husserlian phenomenology share many concerns: the role and nature of phenomenal experience\, the nature of intentionality\, the phenomenology of cognition and emotion\, the structure of self-awareness\, etc. These themes continue to be an inspiration in contemporary debates.

This conference will deal with the nature of phenomenal experience and the place of consciousness conceived from a Brentanian perspective in the context of contemporary work in philosophy of mind. It will thus be centred on issues related to sensory experience\, perception\, imagination\, self-consciousness\, and intentionality\, among others.

---PHENOMENOLOGY\, SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS\, AND THOUGHT: LECTURES BY CHARLES SIEWERT---

Wednesday\, June 11: The viability of a phenomenological approach to consciousness I: Heterophenomenology vs real phenomenology

Thursday\, June 12: The viability of a phenomenological approach to consciousness II: Self-examination and the fallibility of introspection

Monday\, June 16: The relation of consciousness and self-consciousness I: Is there an inner sense?

Tuesday\, June 17: The relation of consciousness and self-consciousness II: Consciousness\, self-consciousness and the regress of self-representation

Monday\, June 23: Consciousness and conceptual thought I: The &sbquo\;phenomenology of thought&rsquo\; controversy

Tuesday\, June 24: Consciousness and conceptual thought II: Experiential thought

---ECTS CREDITS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS---

ECTS credits may be obtained for attending some or all of the events on the programme.

2 ECTS credits will be attributed for the attendance of at least 2 events\, one of which being the lecture series (4)\, and on the basis of the presentation of a written report concerning the events in question.

3 ECTS credits will be attributed for the attendance of at least 2 events\, one of which being the lecture series (4)\, and on the basis of the presentation of a paper at the doctoral students and young researchers seminar.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to insure that his/her faculty will recognize these credits.

Submissions and registration are to be made on the Easychair website before March 1st\, 2014:
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=brentano2014

For further information\, please contact

Johannes L.
