DESCRIPTION:<p>This call for papers and awards are separate from the related conference.&nbsp\; 2025: Call for Papers - Inamori International Writing Prize in the ELSIs of Existing and Emerging Technologies&nbsp\;(https://case.edu/inamori/initiatives/callforpapers)</p>\n<p>The Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence will award two prizes for the best papers in the ethics of existing and emerging technologies from current graduate and professional students and recent graduates. We aim to promote active consideration of the ethical\, legal\, and societal implications (ELSI) in the research and development of technology\, including:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>robotics</li>\n<li>computer science</li>\n<li>data science</li>\n<li>engineering</li>\n<li>biomedical engineering</li>\n<li>medicine</li>\n<li>human enhancement</li>\n<li>augmented/virtual reality</li>\n<li>novel materials</li>\n<li>artificial intelligence</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In an effort to foster global discussion of pressing issues on these topics and accessibility in languages other than English\, the Inamori Center publishes the winning papers\, in print and online\, in multiple languages. The Inamori Center will publish the first place winning paper and an abstract of the second place winning paper in multiple languages as a special volume of&nbsp\;The International Journal of Ethical Leadership. The&nbsp\;2019 - 2022 prize winners&nbsp\;were published in English\, French\, and Spanish. We anticipate the&nbsp\;2024&nbsp\;and 2025 papers will be published in these languages and potentially others.</p>\n<p>The Prize:</p>\n<p>Two winners will be chosen. The first prize consists of:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>prize money of $1000\;</li>\n<li>the opportunity to publish the paper\; and</li>\n<li>a commemorative award.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The second prize consists of:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>prize money of $500\;</li>\n<li>the opportunity to publish an abstract of the paper\; and</li>\n<li>a commemorative award.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Applications are encouraged from:</p>\n<p>Students from across the world\, either military or civilian\, in a graduate or professional-level program (including law or medical students\, etc.) studying for their degree at any accredited college or university or military service academy or war college (or similar).</p>\n<p>Requirements for Paper:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submissions should be a single document in PDF format in English and a minimum of 4\,000 words and a maximum of 12\,500 words. To submit in a language other than English\, please contact&nbsp\;inamoricenter@case.edu.&nbsp\;</li>\n<li>Each submission must contain:\n<ul>\n<li>author name\, contact information\, and\, if applicable\, rank and branch of the military\;</li>\n<li>contact information of the higher education or military institution for which the paper was written\; and</li>\n<li>a statement on the year when the paper was successfully completed.</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li>Only papers written at the level of a master&rsquo\;s degree\, equivalent\, or higher are eligible. The paper submitted must have been written for a graduate or professional-level program either in the most recent&nbsp\;academic year (2024-25) or during one of the three previous academic years (2020-21&nbsp\;through 2023-24). Older papers will not be considered.</li>\n<li>A submission on any topic of ethical\, legal\, and/or societal&nbsp\;concern to existing and emerging technologies.&nbsp\;There must be a strong ethical theme/argument in the paper for it to be considered for the prizes.</li>\n<li>The paper need not be a thesis paper or doctorate paper to be considered for this prize.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Deadline:</p>\n<p>May 1\, 2025</p>\n<p>The Jury:</p>\n<p>The jury will consist of external experts from the fields such as ethics of existing and emerging technologies\, engineering\, philosophy\, law\, and history\, offering a combination of field experience (the practitioner&rsquo\;s perspective) and academia (the theoretical perspective).&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Contact Email:&nbsp\;inamoricenter@case.edu</p>
