DESCRIPTION:
Architecture and Image
The 2nd PhilArch Conference
October 19-20\, 2012
Boston University\, Department of Philosophy
\n
What is architecture? How is architecture understood and how should \nit be understood? With the rise of phenomena such as &lsquo\;starchitects\,&rsquo\; \navant-garde investigations of different creative mediums\, parametricism\,\n and contemporary forms of architectural pragmatism\, and with the \nincreasing specialization of construction processes\, how do we identify \nwhen something is and is not architecture? Or have questions of \narchitectural identity simply become irrelevant?
\n
The 2nd PhilArch conference calls for a return to\, or continuation \nof\, explicitly philosophical inquiry into the character of architecture.\n In particular the conference seeks papers on the theme of architecture \nand its &lsquo\;image\,&rsquo\; broadly construed. Topics may address questions such \nas: Is architecture constituted by its history or by an atemporal\, \nformal structure? Is a pure architectural object possible? What role \nshould marginal practices play in the conceptualization of architecture?\n What is architectural representation? What is the relationship between \nmodels\, drawings\, and images and built architecture? Is architecture \nalways the re-presentation of other content\, or does it create its own \nmeanings?
\n
Keynote Speakers
\n
Dr. Sylvia Lavin :: Professor of Architecture History and Theory
UCLA :: Department of Architecture and Urban Design
\n
Dr. David Kolb :: Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Philosophy
Bates College :: Department of Philosophy and Religion
\n
&nbsp\;Call for Papers
\n
The Boston University Department of Philosophy invites the submission\n of papers from diverse philosophical backgrounds aimed at the careful \nclarification of architectural thought. Preference will be given to \npapers related to the conference theme.
\n
Send complete papers (3\,000-5\,000 words) with a 150 word abstract\, formatted for blind review\, to architecture.philosophy@gmail.com by May 31\, 2012.
\n
&mdash\;&mdash\;-
\n
Download a PDF of the call for papers.
\n
For questions\, contact the conference organizers (architecture.philosophy@gmail.com).
\n
This conference is made possible by the generous financial support of the Boston University Center for the Humanities and Department of Philosophy.
